한국 불교학계의 구성적 특징과 문제점 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국 불교학계의 인적 구성현황과 불교학의 학문적 위상 및 학술지의 영향력 분석을 통해 불교학계의 문제점을 고찰한 것이다. 학문의 발전이 집단지성을 통해 이루어지며, 학회는 대표적인 학문집단이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 한국 불교학의 발전을 도모하는 차원에서 학회의 구성적 문제점을 면밀히 검토할 필요가 있다. 한국의 불교학계는 그 외연이 일반적인 학회의 형태와 비교해 봤을 때 파격에 가까울만치 넓다. 이는 출가 수행자와 불교계 활동가의 현장 경험을 학회로 포섭해 내야하는 필요성에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다. 하지만 학회의 지나친 외연 확대가 학문의 전문성을 훼손한 것 또한 불가피했다. 그 결과가 국가과학기술표준체계 상에서 불교학의 학문적 위상의 추락으로 나타났다. 또한 불교학 관련 학술지의 영향력 저하로 나타났다. 불교학계의 구성상의 특징을 검토해보면 세 가지 정도로 파악된다. 일반적인 학계와 그 인적 구성 현황이 상당히 다르다는 점, 불교를 개인적 관심과 신앙의 대상으로 삼고 있는 학자들이 적지 않게 참여하고 있다는 점, 전문학자가 아닌 불교계 활동가들이 적지 않게 참여하고 있다는 점 등이다. 이러한 특정은 불교학계의 외연을 확대하는 긍정적인 면모가 있지만, 학문과 종교의 경계가 뚜렷하지 않은 문제점을 내포하고 있다. 이에 대한 대책으로는 불교학계의 체질 정비가 필요하다. 아울러 학계 구성원들이 학술적 진정성과 종교적 진정성을 서로 강요하지 않도록 해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study examines the academic community of Korean Buddhist Studies, the status of Buddhist Studies in Korea, and the IF(Impact Factor) of Korean journals in Buddhist Studies. Advances in academia are made through collective intelligence and the academic community is its representative. Therefore, we must carefully analyze problems in the academic community in order to advance Buddhist Studies in Korea. The academic community of Buddhist Studies in Korea has a much broader membership when compared with other academic communities. This characteristic likely originated from the need to incorporate the field experience of Buddhist monks and activists into the community. Consequently, the professionalism and academic status of Buddhist Studies has suffered damage. Furthermore, it has resulted in a deterioration of the impact factor of journals of Buddhist Studies. The academic community of Buddhist Studies in Korea has three distinctive features. First, the composition of the community is quite unique in comparison to other academic communities. Second, many scholars are involved in the field to whom Buddhism is their personal object of individual attention and faith. Third, many participants in the academic community are Buddhist activists who are not professional scholars. These features act positively to expand the scope of the academic community. But it also seems to contain the problem that the boundaries of academia and religion is not clear. To address this problem, the academic community of Korean Buddhist studies needs improvements to its structure. Furthermore, the members of the academic community should not force academic or religious authenticity upon another.
