국문 초록

소비자 금융과 신용 카드 사용이 증가하면서, 개인 파산이 급격하게 증가하고 있다. 개인 파산은 재정적 어려움으로 인하여 파탄에 직면한 개인 채무자가 상환할 수 없는 채무를 현실적인 금액으로 재조정하거나, 탕감하여 줌으로서 새 출발을 가능케 해 준다는 점에서 인생의 전환점이 될 수 있다. 그러나 파산 이후의 자격상의 제한 또는 신용도의 하락과 같은 부정적인 결과도 초래할 수 있다. 개인 파산의 증가와 함께 선행 연구들은 개인 파산의 결정 요인과 개인 채무자들이 파산을 통하여 얻게 되는 경제적 실익에 집중하여 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 미국의 가계를 대상으로 한 데이터를 이용하여 개인 파산자들의 지출 행동과 부채 상환에 관하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과 개인 파산자들의 지출 행동과 부채 상환은 비파산자들과 상이하였다. 또한 파산 선고 이후 시간이 흐름에 따라 이러한 유의한 차이는 다소 감소하는 경향을 보였다.

영문 초록

The growing number of personal bankruptcy filers has spurred extensive literature about household financial conditions prior to bankruptcy filings or immediate financial benefits. Personal bankruptcy can be a turning point in the lives of financially troubled consumers, while personal bankruptcy can have a devastating effect on the filers’ credit information. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of attention on what happens to debtors after they file for bankruptcies. By using U.S. household- level data, this study investigates the financial behavior such as spending patterns and debt payment of personal bankruptcy filers. The findings from this study provide empirical evidence on the differences in financial behaviors between personal bankruptcy filers and non-filers.
