서찰에 나타난 시론 논쟁의 실상

국문 초록

본고는 17세기 후반 졸수재 조성기와 삼연 김창흡사이에 있었던 문학에 관한 치열한 논쟁의 현장을 오고간 서찰이다. 이 논쟁의 특징 중 하나는 일반적인 일대일 단독 채널이 아닌 릴레이 형식을 지녔다는 것이다. 또 다른 특징은 기왕의 논쟁이 주로 인간의 본성을 다룬 것과는 다르게 문학, 특히 시학 전반에 걸친 다양한 토론 내용으로 전개되었다는데 있다. 본 논쟁의 동기 부여는 삼연의 동생인 포음 김창즙이 졸수재의 집을 방문하여 시에 대한 논의를 한 데 있었다. 오산과 동악을 대가로 칭송했다는 말이 씨가 되어 논쟁의 빌미가 되었고, 대가란 무엇인가라는 원론적인 답을 요구함으로써 본격적인 논쟁에 돌입하게 된다. 논쟁의 주제를 크게 셋으로 나누어 시의 이상론, 시인에 대한 인식론 그리고 시 비평론으로 고찰하였다. 삼연은 이상적인 시를 온유돈후를 바탕으로 일정한 형식을 가미한 시라고 본데 반하여 졸수재는 인위적 조탁이 배제된 시인의 진솔한 감정을 재도지기에 담아 표현한 것이라고 보았다. 시인에 대한 인식론에서, 삼연은 시인을 전문인으로 간주하고 노력만 보탠다면 대가의 영역에 들 수 있다고 했다. 반면에 졸수재는 시의 품격의 고하는 개인의 기품에 달렸다고 한정한다. 이의 극복 방안으로 도학으로의 방향 전환을 촉구한다. 비평론 역시 앞의 이상론과 시인론의 범위를 크게 벗어나지 않는다. 다만 첨예하게 대립하던 논쟁, 특히 시 작품에 대한 극단적 평가가 졸수재가 제시한 절충 정신의 권유로 보다 완화되고, 자기 반성 과정을 거친 뒤, 성숙된 모습으로 수용되었다고 보아 결과적으로 비평의 위상을 한 단계 더 올려놓았다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This manuscript is a letter betweenJolsuje Sung-gi, Cho and Samyeon Chang-heub, Kim in later 17^th century including argument of literature. One of feature of this argument is it has relay structure instead of individual channel one by one. Another feature is that past argument usually handle human nature but this argument progressed by literature, especially progressed in various discussions overall the poetics. The motivationof this argument is when Chang-jeub, Kim who is a younger brother of Samyeon visited Jolsuje’s house and had argue with him. The excuse of argument was that he praises Oh-san and Dong-ak, and inrush into regular argument by demanding the theoretical answer of what is the master. This manuscript divided the subject of argument into three and considerate the poem's idealism, epistemology about poet and poetry criticism theory. Samyeon saw the attempt as a poetry which add regular structure but Jolsuje saw this as an expression which excluded artificial carve and put poet’s true emotion in literature’s bowl. The epistemology about poet which is ideal, Samyeon regards the poetry as a specialist and said if he supplement his effort, he could be in the master’s area. In a contrast, Jolsuje limits poetry dignity’s level depends on individual’s dignity. He insists the direction turning into ethics to overcomethis. The criticism theory is also not get out of the area of the idealism and epistemology about poet . But, the argument which had conflicts sharply, especially the radical assessment of poetry works moderated by suggestion of compromising spirit which Jolsuje suggested, through a progress of self-reflection, seem to accept in mature way and it upgrade the status of criticism.
