조선 후기 서구식 지도의 수용과 『회입곤여만국전도』

국문 초록

조선에서 서구식 지도의 수입과 그에 수반된 세계관의 성찰은 1603년 예수회 소속 이탈리아인 선교사 마테오리치(Matteo Ricci, 1552∼1610)가 한문으로 번역 제작한 『곤여만국전도』의 수입에서 시작되었다. 동물 • 선박 등의 그림이 지도의 여백과 바다에 추가되어 있는 『회입곤여만국전도』는 현전하는 4종 중 중국 남경박물원본, 한국 서울대학교박물관본, 일본 남만문화관본만 완질본이다. 이 가운데 서울대학교박물관 소장본과 일본 남만문화관 소장본은 조선에서 제작된 본이다. 또한 서울대학교규장각한국학연구원에 사진만 남아 전하는 『회입곤여만국전도』도 양주 봉선사(奉先寺)본으로 추정되는 지도이다. 이들『회입곤여만국전도』는 조선 후기에 서구식 세계지도가 조선에서 활발하게 제작되었음을 보여준다. 지도의 발문, 지도의 내용 등을 살펴볼 때 서울대학교박물관본이 초본이고, 이를 바탕으로 다른 두 본이 완성된 것으로 추정된다.

영문 초록

In Joseon period, it began to adopt the western maps and attendant consideration of the western world-view with importing ‘Gonyeomangukjeondo’, the map produced and translated in Chinese by Italian missionary named Matteo Ricci(1552~1610). There are three complete sets of the original maps titled ‘Hoeip Gonyeomangukjeondo’, each preserved in Nanging Museum of China, Seoul National University Museum of Korea and Naman Cultural Center of Japan, and two of the three Copies - the original versions in Seoul National University Museum and Naman Cultural Center - were created in Joseon. Also, it is assumed that the picture of ‘Hoeip Gonyeomangukjeondo’ in the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies indicates another version of Hoeip Gonyeomangukjeondo which have existed in Bongseon Temple. These facts suggest that many western world maps were actively made during the Joseon period. Considering the postscript and contents of each version of Hoeip Gonyeomangukjeondo, the complete sets of the map existed in Seoul National University Museum are regarded as the first copy of Hoeip Gonyeomangukjeondo, and other versions are presumed to have been created based on the first copy.
