국문 초록

오늘날, 우리는 여러 문화들이 마주하며 섞이는 문화 다양성 시대를 살아가고 있다. 물론 문화란, 동일 집단 안에서도 저마다 다르기 때문에 우리는 과거로부터 이미 다문화 환경에서 살아가고 있을지 모르지만, 기술문명의 발달 등을 이유로 초국가적 교류가 이루어지는 현대사회에서는 타문화와 공생이 더욱 삶의 필요소로 자리 잡게 되었다. 하지만 실상을 들여다보면, 과거로부터 문화전파나 교류는 주로 개개의 고유성과 특수성을 인정하지 않는 일방적인 문화이식이나 지배로 이루어진 것이었고, 그 결과 타문화에 대한 배려보다 공공연하게 문화의 우열을 가리는 서구중심의 제국주의적 사고가 우리 안에 자리 잡아 문화정체성을 흔들게 되었다. 하지만 문화정체성 없이 문화다양성은 존재 할 수 없으며, 문화다양성 없이 다문화사회가 만들어질 수 없다. 그러므로 오늘날 우리가 말하는 문화다양성은 일방적으로 타자화 된 문화 여럿을 말하고 있을 가능성이 큰 것이다. 이에 대한 문제의식으로, 멕시코 불법이민자의 좌충우돌 미국 적응기를 다룬 영화 <스팽글리쉬>를 통해, 다문화사회라 자부하는 미국사회의 다문화성을 찾아보는 과정으로 글을 진행하였다. 인물 개개인의 특성을 중심으로 이들이 타인과 타문화를 어떻게 마주하는지 들여다보고 현실을 반성해 봄으로써, 다문화 사회의 정체성과 소통이 어떠해야 하는지 생각해 보았다. 이를 위하여 언어가 영화에서 중요한 기제라는 전제로, 언어와 소통에 대하여 살펴보았으며, 주인공 플로르와 딸 크리스티나가 겪는 에피소드를 중심으로 영화의 배경인 미국사회의 다문화성을 관찰하였다.

영문 초록

Today, we live in an age with many diversified cultures. While one may argue that people have been living in a multi-cultural environment since many ages ago, because each individual, even within the same group, may have different perspectives and morals; the real multi-cultural environment didn’t really emerge until recently, especially due to fast advancements of information technology. Such advancements of information technology allowed for easier exchange in many information and cultures, and reinforced accepting and embracing other cultures not only symbiotic but also mandatory in our lives today. However, when viewed more closely, such cultural exchange has not really been an “exchange” historically. Rather, transferring or interchanging of culture has always been enforced by stronger nations, ruling and implanting its own culture and neglecting individual’s specialties or characteristics of weaker nations. As a result, we often create a hierarchy of various cultures internally and identify which culture is more superior than the other. Such notion many times brings crisis in our cultural identity. However, cultural identity cannot exist without cultural diversity and cultural diversity cannot exist without cultural identity. Based on these speculations, this thesis emphasizes the existence of the identity of multi-cultural society and the recognition in the differences in communications through the movie "Spanglish", which shows the Mexican illegal immigrant's adopting to American life, and how the individuals' characteristics face different culture and people.
