국문 초록

우리는 일상적으로 ‘진정성’이라는 말을 자주 언급한다. ‘진정성이 있다’, ‘진정한 무엇’이라고 하는 말은 정치, 예술, 심리학, 고고학, 상업 등 다양한 분야에서 사용되고 있다. 우리가 이 말을 할 때, 진짜, 성실성, 정직 등과 비슷한 뜻으로 사용하는 듯하다. 그렇지만 ‘진정성’을 이 용어들의 유의어 정도로 치부한다면 ‘진정성’의 의미를 놓치게 될 수도 있다. 이 글의 목적은 매우 윤리적이고 도덕적인 느낌을 주는 이 말의 의미를, 그 느낌에 걸맞게, 윤리적 함의에 초점을 맞춰 스케치하는 것이다. 찰스 테일러의 『불안한 현대사회』와 찰스 귀논의 『진정성의 대하여』를 주재료로 삼을 것이며, 이 과정에서 알래스데어 매킨타이어와 폴리쾨르의 도움을 받을 것이다. 진정성의 서양어 어원은 ‘자유롭게 자기 자신을 정립함’이다. 진정성이라는 말이 등장한 배경에는 과학혁명, 종교개혁, 사회계약 이념에 근간한 사회 변화, 무엇보다도 자본주의와 근대 국가가 있다. 여기서 개인과 사회, 내면과 외면, 사실과 가치 등의 절연이 발생했으며, 절연에 맞선 통합성의 요구를 표현하는 것이 진정성이라고 할 수 있다. 이와 유사한 맥락으로 1960년대 이후에 벌어진 ‘정체성의 정치’와 더불어 자기실현 문화를 들 수 있다. 그렇지만 한편으로 이런 대응은 극단적 개인주의, 나르시시즘, 주관주의로 빠져 들고 있는 듯 보인다. 그런데 이 글은 진정성의 윤리적 함의가 여기에 머물지 않는다는 것을 이해하고자 한다. 근대가 낳은 문제 그리고 그에 대한 대응에서 보이는 문제점들은 조금씩 변형되었지만 지금도 계속되고 있다. 그래서 진정성을 고찰하는 것은 오늘날의 사회를 읽고, 문제를 해결하는 데 필수적인 과정일 것이다.

영문 초록

‘Authenticity’ is a routinely often mentioned word. The question of ‘What is authentic?’ is being used in a variety of fields such as a commercial, politics, art, psychology and archeology. We tend to use the word with indifference. When we say the word, we frequently confuse it with ‘sincerity/integrity’, ‘truly’, ‘honesty’, etc. However when it is occurred, the meaning of authenticity could be dismissed just as synonyms of those terms. First of all, the word ‘Authenticity’ is considered very ethically and morally. The purpose of this article is to sketch it by its own idea focusing on ethical implications. I will take The Ethics of Authenticity of Charles Taylor and On Authentic Being of Charles Guignon as main materials and will ask Alasdair MacIntyre and Paul Ricoeur for help. The origin of a word of authenticity is ‘authentikos’. Authenticity has risen by social changes in the background of scientific revolution, the Reformation, the social contract in philosophy and above all thing there has been a capitalism and modern state. These break off a link between the individual and society, inside and outside, also facts and values . Authenticity is the expression of a requirement of integration against it. ‘politics of Identity’ and the culture of self-realization happened in such a context. But this response, on the other hand, seems to get into an extreme individualism, narcissism, subjectivism. In this article, however, I think that the ethical implications of authenticity does not stop here. The modern generated problems has been being modified to continue now. So I think that a search for meaning of the authenticity is indispensable course to read today's society and solve problems.
