국문 초록

한나 아렌트는 자유로운 행위를 정치의 핵심으로 보았다. 자유로운 정치는 언제나 참여자들 사이의 평등을 전제한다. 이와 관련하여 우리는 아렌트가 말하는 정치가 목적(ends)이 아닌 목표(goals)를 지향한다는 사실에 주목해야 한다. 항상 미래에서 현재를 규정하고 이끄는 목적과는 달리, 목표는 현재의 맥락으로부터 나오는 원리이며 정치적 행위의 시작을 촉구한다. 따라서 정치는 목적으로부터 해방되어야 한다. 목적으로부터의 해방은 정치의 무제한성(boundlessness)과 연관된다. 아렌트는 특정하게 관련된 사람들만이 정치적 공간을 구성하는 것을 반대한다. 말과 행위로 드러내는 복수의 사람들이 모인 공간이라면 그것은 정치적 공간이 될 수 있다. 특정한 목적으로부터 정치가 해방된다는 것의 의미는 정치를 제한시킨다는 것보다는 오히려 정치를 모두에게 열린장으로서 이해해야 한다는 것에 더욱 가깝다. 따라서 무제한적인 정치는 새로운 정치적 주체성을 요구한다. 그것은 고착화되지 않는 정체성을 가진, 언제나 새롭게 시작할 수 있는 주체성이다. 이러한 주체성은 정치적 행위를 시작하고자 하는 누구에게 열려있다. 이러한 점들을 통해 아렌트의 정치철학을 이해한다면, 그녀가 말하는 정치는 기득권에 있는 자들만이 정치를 독점하려는 현실속에서 중요한 저항적 의미를 지닐 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

Hannah Arendt regards free action as the core of politics. Free action always presupposes equality among participants. In this context, we have to pay attention to the fact that Arendt's politics aims at ‘goals’, not at ‘ends’. Unlike ends which always in the future rule and lead the present, goals are the principles from present context and urge the beginning of political action. Therefore politics should be free from ends. Being free from ends refers to ‘boundlessness’ of politics. Arendt rejects the political space that especially involved people constitute. If there are plural people who appear themselves by action and speech, this space can be political space. The Meaning of being free from particular ends is not to limit politics. It means that politics should be regarded as the place open to everyone. So boundless politics demands new political subjectivity. This is the subjectivity which has unfixable identity and can always begin afresh. Anybody who tries to begin political action can encounter this subjectivity. If one understands Arendt's political philosophy from this, her politics may get rebellious significance in the reality in which the people who have vested rights try to monopolize politics.
