국문 초록

본고는 현존하는 우리나라 최초의 지석인 백제 <武寧王陵誌石>의 글씨에 나타난 서예미를 탐색한 연구이다. <무령왕릉지석>은 사료적 가치와 더불어 글씨의 예술성이 상당히 높아 백제사와 백제서예를 연구하는데 귀중한 자료가 되고 있다. <무령왕릉지석>의 서체는 위진남북조와의 교류를 통해 서예문화적 교류관계에 놓여있다는데 주목하고, 국내문헌과 중국문헌을 통해 비교하였다. 그러면서 <무령왕릉지석>의 글씨에 나타나는 미적요소를 음양대대론 측면에서 양자의 조화미를 면밀히 고찰하였다. <무령왕릉지석>의 글씨는 남조의 전아한 서풍과 북조의 강건한 서풍을 융합하고 창조적으로 재구성하여 백제화된 서체의 면모를 드러냈다. 용필은 방필과 원필을 겸용하였으며, 결구는 상하좌우에 음양의 법칙을 반영하였다. 상부를 크게 하고 하부를 작게 하여 上陽下陰을 하거나, 좌획을 가늘고 강하게 하고 우획을 굵고 약하게 하여 左陽右陰을 하였다. 장법은 가로줄은 맞추지 않고 세로줄만 맞춘 방법으로 각 행마다 계선이 있다. <왕의 지석>은 상⋅하단의 參差美, 행간의 整齊美, 각고를 하지 않아 자연스러운 自然美, 字體의 統一美 그리고 강하고 부드러운 글자를 상하로 포치하여 中和美가 두드러진다. 이러한 특징은 <난정서>의 장법과도 견줄만 하였다. <무령왕릉지석>의 글씨는 위진남북조 서예의 영향을 받았으나 백제인의 문화와 민족성에 맞도록 수용⋅자득하여 그들의 내재적 심미의식이 풍부하게 담겨 있다. 剛⋅柔 등 여러 대대요소들이 자유분방한 분위기를 조성하면서도 그 자유분방함이 혼란하지 않고, 변화하는 가운데 통일이 되는 정제된 아름다움을 띤다. 여기에 묵취의 기운이 생동하는데, 바로 이러한 점이 <무령왕릉지석>의 독특한 예술 풍격인것이다. 이는 평화롭고 자연스러우면서 함축적인 아름다움을 지니고 있어 중화미가 있다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The writings inscribed in King Muryeong's Memorial Stone show the combination of elegant calligraphic style of the Chinese Southern Dynasty with strong calligraphic one popularized in the Chinese Northern Dynasty, resulting in a creative Baekje's own style. Its writing technique uses the two basic strokes of Bangpil and Wonpil (Bangpil favors sharpness in dot and stroke, while Wonpil for smoothness in dot and stroke) and the law of Yin and Yang is also applied to making the structure of characters of it, where the upper part is large and the lower one is small while thin and strong for the left stroke and thick and weak for the right one. In the formality of its arrangement, the regularity of horizontal line is little considered but vertical line is emphasized with a distinct line of demarcation for each line. King Muryeong's Memorial Stone also shows off different but harmonious beauty in the upper and lower paragraphs, some refinement between lines and overall natural beauty, uniformity in type style and the natural distribution of strong and smooth characters to up and down. Such features could be compared with the technique shown on Nanjeongseo. The characters of King Muryeong's Memorial Stone were influenced by the trend of calligraphy prevailing in the two Chinese Dynasties mentioned above but were adequately changed into Baekje's own culture and sentiment, showing their richness of internal aesthetics. In short, the characters inscribed on it reveal free but orderly, harmonious, and seemingly contradictory but integrated characteristics. Additionally, some intrinsic vitality originated from ink itself could be clearly felt, and that particularly makes King Muryeong's Memorial Stone distinct from other similar letters inscribed in tombs from artistic view. We may say that it includes peace, naturalness and a kind of beauty of neutralization.
