The purpose of this study was to determine nutrient intakes of the smokers and non-smokers among college male students(134 smokers and 113 non-smokers) in Kwangju. There were no significant differences in heights, weights and BMI between the smokers and non-smokers. Most nutrient intakes of the smokers were lower than the Recommended Dietary Allowances. Total energy intake of the smokers was 2264 ㎉/day, and the composition of protein, fat and carbohydrate was 13 : 25 : 62. And that of non-smokers was 2288 ㎉/day and 14 : 25 : 61, respectively. The smokers consumed most nutrients less than non-smokers. The intakes of calcium, iron, vitamin C, and vitamin A of the smokers were 612.2 ㎎, 15.7 ㎎, 48.2 ㎎, and 2029.4 IU. And those of the non-smokers were 629.4 ㎎, 15.3 ㎎, 68.4 ㎎, and 2339.1 IU, respectively. The smokers’ intake of vitamin C was significantly lower than that of the non-smokers(p<0.05). With regard to the sources of vitamin C. smokers consumed kimchis more often and fresh fruits less often than non-smokers. Most nutrient intakes except carbohydrate were not significantly different to smoking level. The results in the study imply that decreased ingestion of vitamin C by smokers may contribute to increasing their risks for chronic diseases compaired with non-smokers.
