영문 초록

This paper will take a look at the academic trends in both Koreas since the liberation and the possible problems and directions of the academic exchanges in ancient historical field. In June 2000, South Korean President Kim Dae Jung and the North Korean leader Kim Jong Il held a historical summit and issued a five-point declaration. The fourth of the declaration covered the issue of cooperation and exchanges between the North and the South. This declaration will provide for increased academic exchanges and cooperation. We also expect great changes, especially in the efforts to discover the shared historical tradition in the North and the South. In the historical field, there will likely be more active exchanges in the ideologically less sensitive ancient history rather than in the politically charged modern history. In order to narrow the gap between the historical understandings and writings on ancient Korean history, the governments and socio-cultural associations of both Koreas must provide encouragement and assistance for joint academic conferences, joint field trips, and exhibition of each other”s cultural remains. Moreover, there should be an organization and financial support for other projects such as the generating the database of ancient historical materials, publication of ancient historical dictionaries, and production of a common textbook on ancient Korean history. It is urgent that we establish both the Committee for Inter-Korean Academic Exchanges and the Fund for Inter-Korean Academic Exchanges. In the meantime, the existing organization such as the Korea Foundation and the Korea Research Foundation can provide the financial support. In the case of Korean history field, the National History Compilation Committee can administer various inter-Korean projects. In addition, it is desirable that various historical associations in South Korea form a joint council to facilitate historical exchanges. The government agencies and academic associations must cooperate in order to lay the sound foundation in further inter-Korean projects.
