영문 초록

Balhae, which had existed from A.D. 698 to A.D. 926 following Goguryeo, was a nation-state of Korea, glorifying the medieval times of Korea as a majestic sovereinty. Balhae was a multi-racial or multi-tribal nation, and had Goguryeo refugees as its leading power. Refugees from Goguryeo made up the basic residents of Balhae, and served as the political leading power. The founder of the nation as well as the royal family consists of the migrants from Goguryeo, which makes Goguryeo descendents the majority of the Balhae society. These demographic traits proves that Balhae is a successive nation following Goguryeo. Balhae was a majestic sovereignty as well as a great empire. The supreme ruler of Balhae was endowed with the status as the emperor, or the king of a great medieval power. Balhae set its own ruling ideology as well as a political system which was appropriate to an empire. The ruler was considered as an emperor, and thus each ruler legislated his own name of an era reflecting his ruling ideology. The fact that Balhae was a majestic sovereignty can also be shown from that the nation exercised its own power on the international relations. Balhae also dealt a fatal blow to Tang through several military operations.
