영문 초록

Goguryeo’s transfer of the capital to Pyongyang in A.D.427 had the purpose of developing the entire economy and culture of the state, achieving the territorial unification, ensuring the security of the capital, and thus alleviating the authority of the nation as a powerful Empire having extensive territory and superior culture. It seems to be the grand strategic intention for Goguryeo to have transferred its capital to Pyongyang, which has been a historic site as well as the political center of the people since the establishment of Dangun Joseon. It is quite obvious that Goguryeo had the great intention to unite the nations of its people and to establish a great empire in the East. The fact that ancient tombs following the early Goguryeo style, such as cavity pyramid-style tombs or early stone-room tombs, are found in this area demonstrates that Goguryeo made an early advancement into Pyongyang area.The chronology of the construction of the tombs, show that Goguryeo advanced into Pyongyang area around the 1st century. This is also shown by the memorial services of Goguryeo seen from in the brick-tombs around Pyongyang. Goguryeo had made Pyongyang its temporary capital twice, in A.D. 247(King Dongcheon) and in A.D. 343 (King Gogukwon). Since then, Pyongyang had served as a sub-capital of Goguryeo, the foothold of the southward advancement, and the center of politics, economics, military, and culture. These temporary transfers of capital were possible since the area around Pyongyang including the basin of the Taedong river had already belonged to Goguryeo, and the security of southern area was firmly guaranteed.
