『삼국유사』 편목 구성의 의미

국문 초록

본고는 『삼국유사』 피은편의 내용 분석과 아울러 『삼국유사』의 편목 설정 과정과 피은편의 설정 의미에 대해 살펴보았다. 특히 기존에 논의되지 않았던 중국 고승전류 외의 국내외 불교문헌 및 당대 불교계의 영향 등에 주목하였다. 먼저 피은편의 내용 분석을 통해 피은의 양상이 승려들의 수행을 위한 은둔, 피은 이외에도 晩年이 된 승려들의 入寂을 위한 사례도 있었음을 확인하였다. 즉 피은편은 수행자로서의 피은이라는 대전제하에 피은의 여러 양상을 보여주는 편목으로 설명될 수 있다. 이러한 내용 분석을 토대로 『삼국유사』의 편목 설정에 대한 『法苑珠林』의 영향을 상정해보았는데, 특히 『법원주림』의 편목명이 책의 백과사전적 성격 상 불교의 여러 주제를 포함할 수 있게 설정되었다는 점에서 『삼국유사』 편목명과의 영향관계를 상정하였다. 이는 『梁高僧傳』 亡身篇과 『續高僧傳』 遺身篇, 그리고 『法苑珠林』 捨身篇과 潛遁篇, 『三國遺事』 避隱篇을 비교함으로써 더욱 명확해진다. 즉 고승전류의 내용을 참고하고 반영한 『법원주림』은 『양고승전』 망신편의편목 의도를 반영하여 사신편을 설정하고, 『속고승전』에서 다뤄진 ‘명예를 버리는 수행’ 내지 ‘은둔을 통한 수행’의 내용은 별도로 잠둔편을 설정하여 구성하였다. 이는 기존 고승전류의 구성 내용을 모두 반영하고자 한 『법원주림』 찬자의 의도일 것이며, 『법원주림』을 접했을 일연은 그 편목 중 잠둔편을 취하여 피은편을 설정한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이렇게 본다면 『삼국유사』 피은편의 설정 의도는 『법원주림』잠둔편과 마찬가지로 은둔 승려들의 전기가 不在하게 됨을 경계하고자 한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 한편 『삼국유사』 편제에 영향을 준 국내외 문헌으로 『법원주림』 이외에도 慧諶의 『禪門拈頌』이나 天頙의 『湖山錄』 등을 상정할 수 있는데, 『삼국유사』가 이러한 여러 문헌들을 참고하여 쓰여진 만큼 그 성격 또한 단일하게 규정될 수 없을 것임을 알 수 있다. 이에 본고가 『삼국유사』 체제에 대한 종합적 이해에 조금이나마 보탬이 되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzed the chapter, entitled the ‘Pieun(避隱)’ in Samgukyusa(三國遺事), the process of organizing the book’s content, and the meaning of including a chapter named Pieun(避隱). The study specifically focused on the effect of old Chinese Buddhist monks’ tales, Buddhist books in and out of Korea, and other Buddhists of the time. First of all, through interpretation of the Pieun, it can be concluded that there were various types of ‘Pieun’s such as a monk’s preparation for death in his later years, other than seclusion for training. In other words, the chapter entitled the ‘Pieun’ was to illustrate those various phenomena of Pieun, under the thesis that the Pieun describes monks’ seclusion for training. On the basis of this analysis, it is supposed that ‘Fayuanzhulin(法苑珠林)’ has a strong effect on Samgukyusa’s content, especially considering that Fayuanzhulin is like an encyclopedia covering hundreds of themes about Buddhism. This effect became even more apparent when comparing Lianggaosengchuan(梁高僧傳)’s ‘Mangshin(亡身)’ chapter, Xugaosengchuan(續高僧傳)’s ‘Yushin(遺身)’ chapter, and Fayuanzhulin’s ‘Sashin(捨身)’ and ‘Jamdun(潛遁)’ chapters with Samgukyusa’s chapter, the Pieun. When Ilyeon(一然) read Fayuanzhulin, he possibly drew upon the chapter, Jamdun, of the book and wrote a chapter with similar contents. In this point of view, the purpose of writing the chapter, the ‘Pieun,’ was to avoid overlooking secluded monks’ biographies, like the ‘Jamdun’ chapter in Fayuanzhulin. Additionally, there were many other books which had an impact on the content of Samgukyusa aside from Fayuanzhulin, such as Hyesim(慧諶)’s ‘Seonmunyeumsong(禪門拈頌)’ and Chunchaek(天頙)’s ‘Hosanrok(湖山錄)’. Since Samgukyusa referred to various books during the process of compilation, the book’s characteristics cannot be summed up into one word. Thus, this study hopefully contributes to the understanding of Samgukyusa’s overall structure.
