九山秀蓮의 禪사상

국문 초록

본고는 근 현대 대표적인 선승(禪僧) 중의 한 분인 구산 수연(九山秀蓮)의 선사상을 조망한 논문이다. 구산은 효봉 학눌(曉峰學訥)의 제자로 순천 송광사를 중심으로 하여 제2 정혜결사를 주창하였던 인물이다. 구산의 선사상을 규명하기 위하여 주목한 것은 보조 지눌(普照知訥)의 선사상의 계승문제이다. 즉 ‘송광사를 중심으로 하여 목우가풍의 계승을 통하여 한국선의 정체성을 세우려 하였던 효봉-구산의 선사상은 어떻게 보조선을 계승하고 있는가?’하는 점이 주된 문제의식이다. 이를 위하여 보조선의 핵심 내용이라 할 수 있는 정혜결사, 선교일치, 돈오점수, 간화선, 정혜등지(定慧等持) 등의 다섯 가지의 문제를 제기하였다. 이러한 요소들은 보조선을 구성하고 있는 핵심 내용이다. 결국 ‘구산의 선사상 속에서 이러한 요소들이 어떻게 계승되고 있는가?’ 하는 점을 규명함으로써 구산의 선사상이 가지는 특징을 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 구산의 선사상의 특징은 정혜결사와 돈오점수의 계승의식이 분명이 있으며, 간화선을 중심으로 하여 보조의 정혜등지를 새롭게 해석하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 결국 구산의 선사상은 보조선을 계승하면서도 나름의 독자적인 해석을 꾀하고 있음을 밝혔다. 따라서 보조선과 효봉-구산으로 이어지는 선사상 사이의 계승과 독자성을 아울러 이해할 수 있는 계기를 마련하였다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper has an objective to review the thought of Gusan-Suyeon, a modern representative Seon master and a pupil of Hyobong-Haknul. He is the figure who promoted the second movement of Jeonghyea-Gyeolsa, centering Songkwang temple in Suncheon province. I paid attention to the problem of succession of Bojo’s Seon thought. Gusan-Suyeon tried to establish the identity of Korean Seon thought through the succession of Bojo-Seon’s tradition. How did the Seon thought of Hyobong and Gusan succeed Bojo’s Seon? That is my main question. To solve this question, I examined five contents of Gusan- Suyeon’s thought, Jeonghyea-Gyeolsa, Seonkyo-Ilchi, Dono- Jeomsu, Ganhwa-Seon and Jeonghyea-Deungji. They are the core of Bojo-Seon thought. Jeonghyea-Gyeolsa is the convention of a resolution for meditation and wisdom. Seonkyo-Ilchi is theconvergence of meditation and doctrine. Dono-Jeomsu is sudden enlightenment and gradual cultivation. Ganhwa-Seon is word contemplation meditation. Jeonghyea-Deungji is the balanced cultivation of meditation and wisdom. How were these contents succeeded from Bojo-Seon to Gusan’s thought? I tried to observe the characteristics of his thought through those contents. There is a consciousness of succession of Jeonghyea-Gyeolsa and Dono-Jeomsu in the characteristics of Gusan’s thought. Centering Ganhwa-Seon, healso interpreted Bojo’s thought of Jeonghyea -Deungji. He succeeded Bojo’s Seon and interpreted Bojo’s thought in his personal view. This paper would make an opportunity to understand the originality of his thought and the succession of Seon thought from Bojo to Hyobong and Gusan.
