영재관찰추천 과정에서 담임교사가 겪는 어려움 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 영재관찰추천 과정에서 초등 담임교사가 겪는 어려움을 알아보고자 학급에서 학생들을 추천한 경험이 있는 교사를 대상으로, 연구의 현장성과 효율성을 고려하여 경력과 성별, 영재교육경험에 차이가 있는 8명의 교사를 선정하여 면담을 통해 심층적으로 분석하였다. 연구를 통해 영재관찰추천 과정에서 담임교사가 겪는 어려움을 크게 영재판별의 어려움, 학부모 관계의 어려움, 교사의 소신대로 추천하기 어려움의 3가지로 범주화하여 분석하였다. 영재판별의 어려움으로는 담임교사마다 영재를 바라보는 관점이 다르고, 영재성에 대한 이해 부족을 들 수 있었다. 학부모 관계에 대한 어려움으로 교사들은 학부모의 높은 기대에 대한 부담을 느끼고 있었으며, 이에 따라 교사는 학부모 추천을 불신하거나 또는 학부모 추천결과를 그대로 수용하는 모습으로 나타났다. 교사의 소신대로 추천하는데 어려움을 느꼈는데 이로 인해 담임교사는 객관적인 자료에 더 의존하고 모범적인 학생을 영재로 추천하는 양상을 보였으며 이에 따라 소외된 영재가 배제되는 모습으로 나타났다. 또한 면담을 통해 영재관찰 추천의 어려움을 극복할 수 있는 방법에 대해 알아보았는데 교사들은 영재성에 대한 이해와 확신, 신뢰할 수 있고 공정한 분위기 형성, 동료추천 활용, 영재행동체크리트의 구체적 보완이 필요하다고 하였다.

영문 초록

In order to identify and analyze what difficulties teachers at elementary schools experience in observing and nominating gifted students, this study conducted an in-depth analysis, based on interviews, of eight teachers’ experience with gifted students, depending on the effect of the lengths of their careers, genders, and differences in their experience with the education of gifted students on the effectiveness and efficiency of their teaching. This study identified and analyzed three categories of difficulties teachers experience in observing and nominating gifted students: namely, the difficulties at discerning gifts, the difficulties in relations with parents, and the difficulties to make nominations based on the teacher’s own observation and conviction. The difficulties stems from the fact that each teacher has a different notion or conception of what a gifted student is and that he or she may not possess adequate knowledge or understanding of students’ gifts. The difficulties concerning relations with parents shows that the system of observing and nominating gifted students acts as a burden on teachers with respect to their dealings with parents, given the high interest and enthusiasm of Korean society for education in general. Teachers, in other words, either did not trust parents’ nominations of their own children or completely accepted parents’ nominations without further questions. Given the difficulties for teachers to nominate based on their own observation and conviction, they tended to nominate exemplar students as gifted students, trusting how objectively well they academically perform. This had an effect of leaving excluded actually gifted students. The interviews were also used to explore what better alternatives could be used to discern and nominate gifted children. The interviewed teachers identified the need for more certain guarantees of children’s gifts, for a trustworthy and fair atmosphere for the related processes, for peers’ nominations, and for the improvement of the checklist for gifted children’s behavior or signs.
