In the Neolithic age of Korea, there were largely two traditions of pottery culture: decorated pottery and plain or undecorated pottery(無文土器). It is not yet proved which decorated pottery and the plain pottery was produced first because of scarcity of relics that have been has been excavated. There are some Japanese scholars who claim the undecorated pottery is the oldest in the Neolithic age. Nowadays, the decorated pottery is generally considered to precede the plain pottery in Korea. Even in this case, the undecorated pottery is not yet clearly defined and thus, pottery which was manufactured without decorations or designs even after the Bronze age. is often included in the category of the plain pottery. As the author dealt with the confusion about the terminology on the plain pottery in a separate thesis, the author calls all plain pottery produced in the Periods from the late Neolithic age to the Chalcolithic age “coarse undecorated pottery”(粗質無文土器) to di―stinguish it from the plain pottery produced after the Bronze age. The terminology, comb-marked pottery, was first used by the late Japanese Ryosaku Fuiita(藤田亮策) in 1930 when he claimed that Korean decorated pottery in the Neolothic age was ’a direct introduction from Kammkeramik in northern Eurasia. Comb-marked pottery is a translation of Kamrnkerarnik. He placed under the category of the comb-marked pottery all earthenwares with incised comb-like decorations ……a pottery with decoration of more than one parallel line or dotted line. However, the majority of the decorated pottery discovered in Korea does not meet the definition as given above. Even the form and decorations of pottery produced in northern Eurasia in the Sub-Neolithic age vary depending on the locations and the periods of production. Korea cannot be an exception in this respect. The decorated pottery in the Neolithic age in Korea has various designs, depending on the location and the time of the production. It is, therefore, not proper to call all decorated pottery produced in the Neolithic age in Korea “comb-marked pottery” or Kamrn―keramik. This thesis deals with the decorated pottery. based on the survey of the pottery discovered along the valley of the Han River and the West Coast including Kanghwa Island(江華島) and in the final analysis, deals with special features and chronology of the decorated pottery of Korea as a whole. The dominant designs found on the decorated pottery of the Neolithic age in Korea are short slash pattern, herring bone pattern(魚骨文) and checker pattern(格子文) incised with instrument which has a single or multiple teeth. There are some earthenwares of pit-marked pattern(窩文) incised with sharp-pointed instruments such as bird’s bone or bamboo stick. There are some potteries impressed with an instrument which has a design of dotted Jines or short slash lines. Of particular patterns, there are potteries discovered in Arnsa-dong(岩寺洞), Seoul and Chitapni(智塔里), Pongsan-gun(鳳山君), Hw-anghae Province (黃海道) which have pattern of birds bone or co―centric circle. There are also those with twisted cordmark or applique pattern(隆起文) found in Tongsam-dong(東三洞), Pusan(釜山) and those with thunder pattern(雷文) found in Hoenyong-gun(會寧郡), or Nongpo-dong(農圃洞), Kyongsong-gun(鏡城郡), both North Ham-kyong Province(咸鏡北道). As for the position of decorations, the dominant fasion is marking a decoration on the whole surface of the pottery. But there are some which have no decoration on the rim(口綠部) or the lower part of the body of the pottery(胴體部下部). In the case of the decoration on the whole surface, there are some earthenwares which have different patterns on the rim and lower part of the body.
