영문 초록

Nearly 100,000 people of the Palhae(Pohai) tribe moved in the span of 190 odd years to Koryo beginning from the ninth year of the rule of King Taejo(太祖) of the Koryo Dynasty. Among the Palhae people who moved to Koryo were Crown Prince Taekwanghyon(大光顯) of the last Palhae King Insun(譚譔) ranking military officers and other leaders. This thesis attempts to deal with problems of from where the Palhae tribe moved to Koryo, what treatment Koryo accorded the Palhae people moving into its territory for naturalization and how Koryo utilized such a large number of the Palhae people. The limited knowledge and reference material of the author may not shed much light to’ understanding of such problems, but the author thinks it very fortunate that based on foreign reference material and views, though fragmentary, of scholars, he can present his opinion on certain problems. The first problem concerns the time Crown Prince Taekwanghyon came to Koryo. An article in “Koryosasaega”(高麗史世家) had the date as the 17th year of the rule of King Taejo of the Koryo Dynasty, but to the author, the date seems to be wrong. The ninth year of the rule of King Taejo as described in “Koryosajolyo”(高麗史節要), “Tongguktonggam”(東國通鑑) or “Koryosayonpyo”(高麗史年表) (Chronology of the Koryo Dynasty), appears to be correct. The second issue concerns how Koryo took advantage of the Palhae people since the Palhae People moved to Koryo in the early stage of the foundation of the Koryo Dynasty……a time when Koryo was faced with hard tasks in two fronts, that is, Silla and Hupaekchae(後百濟) were still split in the south and Koryo was tackling a difficult problem of exploring the northern area. To pursue the dual policy, King Taejo of the Koryo Dynasty was employing such barbarians as Jurchen(女眞), Mo-ho(靺鞨) and T’ieh-li(鐡利), Hence, it is possible that Koryo had made use of the antagonism of those barbarians against Kolan in pursuing its policy. The barbarians were renowned for their bravery. The third point concerns an guess that Crown Prince the Taekw-anghyon and other ranking officials might have come to Koryoescorted by a large number of soldiers. To back up this guess, it should be poi―nted out that most of the noted descendants of Palhae in the Koryo History were soldiers. The final point concerns the pride of the Palhae people. They had been engaged in rebellious wars against Kalan until the decline of Kalan. Even long after the defeat of Palhae, the Palhae people maintained their identity as such when they moved to Koryo, thus showing that the Palhae people had a strong nationalistic prid.
