영문 초록

This paper has surveyed the origin, the introduction, the suppliant and ascetic purpose and the social functions of the buddhism through the carving of buddhist statues. It is known that the carving of buddhist statues has influenced in forming the ancient buddhism culture. The ancient people tried to show the buddhism charity and the precept through it. To be sure, the understanding of the buddhism will help grasp the ancient people's life dynamically as well as the political and social thought at that time. In ancient times in Korea, the beginning of the carving of buddhist statues was traced to the mid fourth century, the natives in P'yongyang in Koguryo already made the carving of statues modelled from the buddhist statue imported from the northern China. In addition, the building of the temples in P'yongyang impacted the carving of buddhist statues in Hansan area in Paekche as well as in the northern Koguryo. But it was since the buddhism was nationally accepted and the temples were built that the buddhist statues installed in temples were prevalent in three kingdoms. In three kingdoms, the carving of the buddhist statues were similar to the background of the acceptance of buddhism in being influenced by the thought and belief related to the state and the king. After the unification of the three kingdoms, the carving of the buddhist statues was lively developed to the individual belief. Therefore it is concluded that the social functions of the carving of the buddhist statues were the deification of the king, mitigation of the unequal social institution and policy, and the spiritual unification of all the social class. Besides, it is examined that through installing the buddhist statues and drawing the buddhist statues in the tombs, the ancient people's mystic notion on death such as the immortality or the continuance theory was reflected in the funeral.
