영문 초록

The fortress of Silla spread around the northern mountain ranges of Sobaek have several characteristics regarding their conditions of location, facility types, and the construction process. Firstly, the primary walls of the interior and the exterior, under strict planning, have been constructed at the same time. Outside these, the supporting walls and reinforcing walls are found. It is uncertain to determine which wall was built first, however, considering that there are more fortress found with the supportive walls than reinforcing walls, it is conceived that the latter came after. According to topographic conditions the primary walls are higher in areas where creeks are cut off, and it can be assumed that the lengths of the supportive walls have gotten controlled as well. Silla, after first advancing into Sangju, using the vast plains to its advantage, distributes fortress in the area. These fortress, not only using Silla’s previous castles, but also using material recycled from other nation’s previous castles, reigned over the Sobaek mountain ranges. Most of these fortress were over 1km in their circumference, which are considered to be quite large, and this is seen as correspondent to the population within each walled city.
