영문 초록

The pros and cons for early English learning in foreign countries has constantly been an issue in Korean society. This study sets out to provide the reliable source for the people getting confused about early English learning in foreign countries, examining the participants' experience, perception, attitudes and current situation. Six participants who were in foreign countries during their primary school days were interviewed by the researcher through face-to-face in-depth interviews. The results are as follows: early English learning gave them a favorable attitude towards English but most of them failed to be accustomed to Korean normal academic process and did not have a strong perception of their linguistic identity. Furthermore, their interviews left a doubt about whether their early learning in foreign countries was necessary because their unskilled mother tongue proficiency caused them to have some difficulties in the university entrance examination. Thus this paper suggests that early English learning in foreign countries should be considered seriously if they have to survive and spend their life time in Korea and that they should study abroad at normal age(e.g. college level) rather than at early age.
