『고승전』의 선정 및 삼매에 대한 분석적 고찰

국문 초록

오늘날 기계문명이 이룩한 정보화시대의 한 가운데 있다. 편리성의 추구와 함께 물질적 욕구에 따른 사회 병폐가 만연한 오늘날 그 치유적 대안이 필요하다. 성찰에 의한 수행을 제창한 선(禪)의 내적 치유방식은 불교의 역사와 궤를 같이한다. 선수행은 불교를 지탱하는 근간이자 또한 다양한 사회문제의 해결을 위한 효율적 방법의 하나이다. 문명에 대한 반성적 성찰의 방법으로서 사회에 대한 다양한 선 프로그램을 제시해야 한다. 그것은 간화선의 돈오(頓悟) 방식보다 점수(漸修)라는 용이한 방편이 될 것이다. 선 수행을 기저로 탄생한 종파가 선종(禪宗)이다. 그런데 선종은 최고의 근기가 행할 수 있는 선 즉 간화선을 탄생시켰다. 수행자들은 조사(祖師)의 언구(言句)와 방할(棒喝)에 매진하였다. 그리고 스승과 제자의 비밀스런 관계만 중요시했다. 그렇다면 선이 대중들을 향하는 동력을 잃어버릴 수 있다. 따라서 오늘날 ‘간화선의 대중화’라는 말은 한계점을 지닌다. 그 한계점을 극복하기 위하여 선종 발생 이전에 편찬된 『고승전』에 주목할 필요가 있다. 『고승전』은 양(梁)의 혜교(慧皎)가 엮은 것으로서 남북조 시대에 활동했던 고승들의 행적이다. 『고승전』은 선종이라는 종파적 의식이 가미되지 않은 순수 체험과 함께 다양한 선(禪)적 문구들을 보여준다. 인도에서 들여온 선의 가르침이 그대로 적용된 흔적들을 볼 수 있다. 더불어 누구나 다가갈 수 있는 방법들이 풍부하게 내재한다. 이들 내용은 오늘날 알려진 행법들의 연원임을 확인할 수 있다. 이에 따라 『고승전』에 대한 선학(禪學)적 고찰이 절실할 수밖에 없으며, 그 기초 작업으로서 용어 분석이 선행되어야 한다. 『고승전』의 선사들은 선을 뿌리 내리게 하기 위해, 다양한 방법들을 실험했으며, 갖가지의 방편들을 동원한 흔적들을 보여준다. 이를 불교사 혹은 교의적 검토가 아닌 선학연구의 입장에서 고찰하였다. 그리고 선과 직접적으로 관련되는 용어들을 추출하여, 선경(禪經)-『고승전』-『속고승전(續高僧傳)』등으로 이어지는 의미적 추이를 살펴보는 것이 중요하다. 보다 풍부한 선용어 분석 작업을 누적시키고 이를 통해 오늘날 포교에 응용하고자 함이다.

영문 초록

Standing in the middle of information age in modern society, there are needs of curing solution for unconditional pursuit of convenience and materialistic desire. ‘Seon(禪)’, the inner curing way of self-examination practice have come with the history of Buddhism. The practice of Seon is not only the root that sustains the core of Buddhism but also one of the most efficient methods that solves various social problems. Thus, there should be a choice of meditation programs as a way of self-reflection about a civilization. However, it may fall into a convenient means, “Step training”, not “Sudden enlightenment of Ganhwaseon(看話禪)”. Seon sect(禪宗) is deviated from the root of Seon practice, and Seon developed it to Ganhwaseon, which can be performed by the most patience. Ascetics were devoted into the short words as well as stick and shout from Great master. Also, they valued only the undisclosed relationship between masters and apprentices, which caused the loss of Seon spirit spreading to the public. That is the reason that “popularization of Ganhwaseon” can be realized. In this sense, the “Gao-Seng-Chuan(高僧傳)” that was published before Seon sect to originally overcome this problems needs to be reviewed. The “Gao-Seng-Chuan” is a book with ascetics’ stories in the Period of North and South Dynasties from China written by Hui-jiao(慧皎, 495～554) from Yang. “Gao-Seng-Chuan” shows not only pure experience of out of religious prejudice but diverse phrase of Seon that applies the teaching of Seon from India. It also demonstrates how the public can approach to Seon in various ways. These have been the origin of prevailing ascetic practices nowadays. Thus, the analysis based on Seon is inevitable, starting from terminology analysis. Ascetic in “Gao-Seng-Chuan” performed different tests and applied all means to spread the teaching of Seon. This study is to analyze in the light of Seon research, not Buddhism or doctrine. It is essential to extract terminology and track how it has been changed to Seon Sūtra, etc. to richen the data of Seon terminology analysis and to apply to the preach of Seon.
