페미니스트 참여 관찰 연구에 대한 성찰

국문 초록

질적 연구 방법을 사용한 연구들은 증가하고 있지만, 연구자들이 직면하는 다양한 윤리적 문제들은 개인적인 경험으로 존재하면서 시행착오가 반복되는 결과를 낳고 있다. 따라서 연구자들이 경험하는 갈등, 도전, 문제들을 성찰하고 대처 방안을 모색하는 것이 필요하다. 본 논문은 연구자가 참여 관찰 연구를 진행하면서 경험한 윤리적 문제들을 성찰하고자 하였다. 페미니스트 질적 연구를 하면서 연구자는 다양한 윤리적 문제에 직면하고, 연구자가 통제할 수 없는 상황에 처하기도 한다. 연구자는 페미니스트 참여 관찰 연구의 틀 안에서 성매매 경험이 있는 십대 여성들을 만나면서 ‘대화와 인터뷰의 경계’, ‘권력 관계의 중층성’, ‘재현의 정치성’ 문제를 고민하게 되었다. 연구자와 참여자의 관계가 지속되면서 인터뷰는 대화로 대체되었고, 참여자들은 대화를 하면서 위로를 받고 상처를 치유하였다. 또한 학벌이 좋은 센터의 선생님이라는 연구자의 지위는 권력과 권위를 지니면서 십대 여성들이 인터뷰에 응하도록 하는 주요한 요인으로 작용하였다. 그러나 관계가 지속되면서 권력 관계는 중층적인 양상을 보였다. 그리고 연구자가 십대 여성들에게 익숙해지면서 인터뷰의 내용이 십대 여성들에 대한 낙인을 강화할 수 있는 위험성을 깨닫지 못하기도 했다. 이러한 문제들을 경험하면서 연구자는 연구 결과물뿐 아니라 과정도 참여자들에게 도움이 되는 방식으로 진행되는 것이 중요하다고 생각하게 되었다. 또한 연구의 특성에 따라 새로운 연구 윤리들이 부상하며, 맥락에 따른 대처가 필요하다는 것을 깨달았다. 본 논문을 통해 많은 연구자들이 질적 연구 경험을 공유하고 맥락에 따른 새로운 연구 윤리들을 추가함으로써 페미니스트 연구 윤리가 더욱 풍요롭고 엄밀해지기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Although studies are increasing which use the qualitative research method, diverse ethical problems which researchers confront exist as individual experiences. In this situation, it is necessary to reflect conflicts, challenges, and problems and to find ways to cope with them. This study tries to reflect ethical problems which the researcher experienced doing participant observation study. Doing feminist qualitative research, the researcher confronts diverse ethical problems and cannot control situations. The researcher reflected on the boundaries of conversation and interviews, the multi-characteristics of power relations, the politics of representation during meetings with teenage girls who had been involved in prostitution. As the relationship continued, interviews were replaced with conversation, and participants were comforted and healed. Moreover, the researcher’s status of teacher with a high education background had power and authority that made teenage girls comply with the interview request. As the relationship continued, however, power relations became multi characteristics. Furthermore, as the researcher became familiar to teenage girls, the researcher did not realize the danger that the contents of the interview could enhance the stigma. Experiencing these problems, the researcher think it is important that processes as well as findings are helpful to the participants. In addition, according to characteristics of the research, new research ethics may emerge, and reactions in the context are needed. Sharing one’s qualitative research experiences and adding new research ethics in context, feminist research ethics will become more abundant and rigid.
