국문 초록

본 연구는 성매매 집결지에서 10년 이상 ‘일’해 온 여성의 체험에 근거하여, 섹슈얼리티 수행과 정체성 (재)구성의 문제들을 탐구한다. 집결지에서의 성판매 ‘일’은 내부의 구조화된 절차를 중심으로 손님에 따라 다양하게 수행된다. 특히, 업주, 핌프, 동료 등에 의해 통제되는 공간적 맥락은 성판매 여성뿐 아니라 성구매 남성의 행위를 제약하며, 양자의 권력관계에 역동을 생산한다. 성판매 ‘일’의 수행은 ‘성판매 여성’이라는 기표와 역할에 대한 동일시나 성매매 공간의 지배질서에 완전히 통합되는 것이 아니라, 몸/감정의 부분적 거래가 가능하도록 정체성을 재구성하는 과정을 수반한다. ‘성폭력’과 ‘성매매’ 등은 ‘대상화된 성’이라는 연속성에도 불구하고, ‘당하는’ 것이 아닌 ‘대주는’ 행위성의 차이에 의해 구분된다. 성판매의 체험은, 젠더화된 자아의 낙인(stigma)에 대한 부정과 회피를 통해 전형적인 성역할을 강화하는 방식으로 작용하기도 하지만, 전형적인 여성 정체성‘들’ 사이의 간극으로부터 저항의 지점을 생산할 가능성을 함축한다. 요컨대, 성판매 ‘일’에 따른 정체성의 문제들은 시·공간 규정적이지만, 낙인으로 인해 사회적 배제의 경험이 누적될 때 빈곤화를 초래하고 자신의 삶을 특정한 공간과 관계에 한정시킬 수 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구의 사례들은 가부장제의 ‘전형’ 또는 ‘저항’ 등 이분법적 관점으로는 독해되기 어려운 성판매 체험의 복합성을 드 러냄으로써 이에 근거한 실천과제를 요구한다.

영문 초록

This research intends to examine the problems concerning the performance of sexuality and temporal-spatial fragmentation and the continuance and hierarchy of identity based on the experiences of women who have been selling sex as ‘work’ (for 10 to 30 years and more) in red-light districts. Although the work of selling sex is performed mechanically in accordance with the pre-structuralized procedures of the red light districts, the work is often accompanied with emotional labor and stress due to buyers’ hierarchical and belittling attitudes, which result in the distancing of identity from the sex selling ‘work’. The performance of selling-sex as ‘work’ is not totally integrated into the identification as prostitute or to the dominant order in the sex trade space. Rather, it involves the process of reconstructing identity to make partial trades of body/sexuality possible. This fragmentation and continuance of identity explains the way how women with various inclinations and backgrounds co-ordinate their identity and selling sex as ‘work’. The experience of selling sex produces a gap or distance between social stigma and typical female identities. Typical gender roles can be reinforced while denying and escaping the stigma, even though there also is the possibility of resistance derived from the gaps of identities. When accumulated, experiences of exclusion in the form of stigma can bring about impoverishment and as well as restriction of their women’s lives to a particular space and relationships. The problems of identity reconstruction in selling sex as 'work' show that the practice issues should be based on the complexity of experiences of the women selling sex.
