한국의 경기순환과 대미ㆍ대중 수출의존도

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 미국과 중국의 경기순환에 대한 한국의 경기순환의 동조성에 관해서 한국의 대미, 대중수출의존도에 초점을 두어 분석한다. 이를 위해 먼저 한국, 중국, 미국의 양국 간 수출변화와 각국의 경기순환과 수출과의 변화추이를 살펴보고, 벡터자기회귀모형(VAR model)을 이용하여 미국의 경기순환이 한국의 대중수출 및 경기순환에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 연구 결과, 미국의 경기변동에 따른 대중수출의 변동이 미국의 경기변동에 따른 대미수출보다 크다는 점을 발견하였다. 이러한 결과는 미국의 경제성장이 한국의 대중수출에 크게 영향을 미치고 있음을 의미한다. 이는 중국이 한국의 최대 수출국으로 부상하였다 할지라도 여전히 미국의 경기순환에 의존하는 정도가 크며, 이러한 대미 의존도는 중국의 대미수출 증가로 인한 한국의 대중수출 증가를 통해서 이루어진다는 점을 시사한다. 또한, 한국과 미국의 경기순환의 상관성과 미국의 경기변동에 대한 한국의 경기변동의 의존도는 상당히 높은 점을 발견하였다. 이러한 결과는 중국경제가 한국경제에 그 영향력을 크게 확대하고 있는 것은 사실이나, 미국경제를 대체해서 한국경제를 이끄는데 아직 한계가 있음을 시사한다. 이는 미국의 경제성장이 한국의 대중수출로 이어지는 구조에서는 여전히 미국의 경제가 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 의미한다.

영문 초록

We investigate the international business cycle transmission among the Korea, China, and US. Our study explores not only bilateral trade dependency in terms of exports between pair countries but also business cycles and exports trend of each country to show the pattern of economic interdependency among these countries. Empirically, VARs(Vector Autoregressions) are used to examine the relative impacts of the US business cycle on the Korean export performance to China as well as on the business cycles. The empirical results show that due to the transmission of the US business cycle, the response of the Korean exports to China is much larger than the response of those to the US. This implies that the economic growth in the US has a strong influences on Korean exports to China via Chinese export increase to the US. Furthermore, our research also found ⅰ) strong correlation of the business cycles between Korea and US, ⅱ) high dependency of Korean business cycles on the US, and ⅲ) the fact that the US business cycles accounts for the part of the fluctuation of Korean exports to China. This implies that due to the high dependency of Chinese exports on the US market and Chinese trade structure which depends on intermediate goods import processing and final goods exporting, Korea also show high dependency on the US economy via the economic relationship with China.
