영문 초록

Pre-service elementary school teachers should have an excellent command of English and a better understanding of English-speaking countries’ culture to be effective communicators and teachers of English. Elementary school teacher training institutions across Korea have provided various programs in the curriculum, and extracurricular programs to assist students to improve their English communication skills and teaching abilities. Among the extracurricular programs, English study-abroad programs have been implemented for about a decade. Developing a tailor-made program for the pre-service elementary school teachers is strongly needed to maximize the effectiveness of the training. This research studies the developmental steps that one university of education has taken over the last 7 years to improve the English study-abroad program to meet the needs of students and the circumstantial changes. The period is divided into three stages, and the main characteristics of each stage are discussed. Also, the reasons for change and improvements are explained for each stage. Developed gradually through feedback from the students, teachers, home stay families, and program coordinators over the 7 years, the tailor-made six-week program is suggested. This includes leveled English classes mixed with international students, a TEFL program, a week-long primary school class observation, home stay, and cultural experience activities. The necessity and importance of preparation sessions before the program and follow-up sessions after the program are also discussed.
