Tourism in the Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Sabah has the potential as a world class tourism spot and provides economic development. Protected areas have important environmental values and they are often established in sensitive environments. There are number of potential environmental effects that can arise from tourism that degrade the natural assets of protected areas and lower their amenity value. Therefore, sustainable manner is important for the tourism management. SIMCA comprises of Lankayan Island, Billean Island and Tegaipil Island had been gazette as a conservation area in December 2001 and in 2003 officially declared as Category Ⅱ Marine Protected Area (MPA). However, there is about 17 hectares development of resort involved which is in the land area of Lankayan Island under EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) and approval by Malaysian State Government of Sabah. The management of Lankayan Island Dive Resort together with the Sabah Environmental Protection Department and Sabah Wildlife Department has introduced various aimed to reduce the problems caused by the tourism. Such as the control of illegal fishing within the conservation area by the sea patrol enforcement, water monitoring on weekly basis to gather long term data distribution and pattern, sedimentation traps installed in permanent survey sites around Lankayan Island reefs to monitor the coral mortality and has applied the Hydroponics Treatment System (HTS) as a biological filtration to convert nitrite to nitrate for the sewage treatment in that island. This paper examines the management system that been implemented by Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA) to mitigate impacts and to ensure that the tourism activities will be sustainable.
