서울 창신동 〈安養庵 磨崖觀音菩薩坐像〉 硏究

국문 초록

〈安養庵 磨崖觀音菩薩坐像〉은 그간 잘 알려져 있지 않았던 근대의 조각상으로 기존의 연구에서 부분적으로만 다루어져 왔으며, 이전 시기에 비해 퇴락된 양식의 조각상으로 인식하는 경향이 있었다. 본 연구에서는 〈안양암 마애보살상〉을 제작배경과 함께 당시의 조각들과 비교하여 그 특징과 의의를 고찰해 봄으로써 미술사적 의의를 찾아보고자 하였다. 안양암은 종로구 창신동에 위치한 사찰로 한국불교 염불정토종의 총본산이다. 안양암의 신앙적 배경과 안양암 인근에 위치하고 있었던 고려시대의 마애보살상들이 〈안양암 마애보살상〉을 제작하는 주요 요인으로 작용하였을 것으로 보이며, 현재 〈안양암 마애보살상〉의 향좌측 석벽에 조상 기록이 남아 있어 제작자와 조성에 참여한 이들을 확인할 수 있다. 또한 사찰지인 안양암지에는 이 마애상의 제작과 관련한 구체적인 기록을 제공하고 있어 주목된다. 〈안양암 마애보살상〉은 19세기 말에서 20세기 초에 걸쳐 활동한 충청지역의 유명한 화승인 錦湖若效와 그의 문하에 있었던 永性夢華가 참여하고 尹東根이라는 사람이 석공으로 참여하여 조성한 불상으로, 불화의 도상들이 부분적으로 채택되어 적용되고 있음을 볼 수 있었다. 이 보살상은 당시 민간 발원의 우수한 기법으로 제작된 근대기의 대표적인 마애상이라고 할 수 있으며, 불화승이 밑그림을 그린 기록과 제작과 관련된 기록이 남아 있어 불화승과 석공과의 관련성, 그리고 제작상황을 확인해 볼 수 있었던 의미 있는 상임을 알 수 있었다. 이번 연구를 통해 근대 불교조각을 바라보는 새로운 시각의 일단을 제공하는 계기가 되었으면 한다.

영문 초록

The Seated Avalokiteshvara Image at Anyang-am(安養庵 磨崖觀音菩薩坐像) is a modem sculpture that has not been known well to this day. It was discussed only partially in the existing studies and was recognized as a style declined than the previous time period. This study examined the background of producing the Seated Avalokiteshvara Image of Anyang-am and also compared its characteristics and meaning with other statues to search for its significance in art history. Anyang-am is a Buddhist temple located in Changshin-dong, Jongro-gu. It is the head temple of Yeombul Jeongto Order(念佛淨土宗) of Korean Buddhism. The religious background of Anyang-am and the two seated Bodhisattva images of the Goryeo dynasty located near Anyang-am seem to be the main causes for creating the Seated Avalokiteshvara Image of Anyang-am. The records remain on the left rock wall of the Seated Avalokiteshvara Image of Anyang-am at present from which one may confirm the manufacturer and others who participated in the process. The chronicle Anyang-am temple(安養庵誌) is also drawing attention by presenting detailed records on the manufacture of this Image. The Seated Avalokiteshvara Image of Anyang-am was created by a famous Buddhist painter from the Chungcheong region who showed activity in the late 19th to early 20th century, along with his follower Yeongseongmonghwa(永性夢華) and a stonemason named Yoon Dong-geun(尹東根). One can see that icons of Buddhist paintings were partially chosen and applied. This Avalokiteshvara Image of Anyang-am is a representative Buddhist statue of the modem age produced with superior techniques that have a civil origin. Records that a Buddhist painter drew the draft and those related to the statue's production are discovered, indicating the relationship between Buddhist monks and stonemasons as well as production circumstances and revealing the statue's significance. I hope this study provides a part of a new viewpoint toward modem Buddhist sculptures.
