국문 초록

재미동포의 한국어 교육은 1900년대 초반부터 이루어진 미국을 향한 한국인의 이민과 더불어 시작되었다. 재미동포의 한국어 교육은 그 이후 1930년대 중반을 기점으로 하여 약 25년간 거의 중단되어 있었다가 1960년대에 들어와서 재개되어 확산의 길을 걷게 되었다. 여기에는, 한국 정부의 노력보다는, 역시 재미동포의 자발적인 노력과 더불어 미국 정부의 이민정책과 교육정책이 중요한 요인으로 작용했다. 재미동포의 한국어 교육에 대한 한국 정부의 본격적인 개입은 1980년대 이후부터 이루어졌다. 재미동포의 한국어 교육에 대한 한국정부의 교육정책과 지원은 그 이후에도 지속되었지만, 그것은 그다지 현실성 있는 정책이나 지원이 되지 못했다. 현재에도 재미동포의 한국어 교육은 여전히 한글학교와 미국 중·고등학교의 한국어 반에 의존하여 이루어지고 있다. 그러나 이들 재미동포 교육기관은 교육과정과 교재, 교사, 교육방법, 시설 등에서 어려움을 호소하고 있다. 장차 이들 문제점을 극복하는 방안이 적극적으로 모색할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

It began with emigration to teach korean to korean residents in the United States by their leaders independently in the 1900’s. Since the middle of 1930’s, this education had been discontinued for 30 years. It was in the 1960’s affair which this education began again and was encouraged. It was not owing to the korean government’s efforts, but to exertions by korean residents in the United States and the emigration policy of the United States. The korean government has been taking part in korean education for korean residents in the United States since the 1980’s. Concretely speaking, korean government has began not only to establish korean schools and korean education institutes, but also to support korean language schools from the 1980’s in the United States. However, the government’s policy for it has not really been an actuality up to now. Although korean education in the United States has been coming into force by korean language schools and korean classes of formal american schools for the most part, the korean government’s support of it has been insignificant. Especially, these institutes have been requiring the korean government’s support for its curriculum, textbooks, teaching tools, equipment and teachers. The following is the potential methods to solve the problems: to complete and proclaim the tentative standard curriculum, to develop textbooks and teaching tools according to the curriculum and various conditions, to collect contributions for korean education, and to establish the teacher education and training system. It is expected to fulfill these methods in the future.
