송대 선수행론에 대한 교육적 이해

국문 초록

이 글은 중국 송대 선불교인 무사선, 문자선, 묵조선의 선수행에 대해서 깨달음을 이루기 위한 방법론으로서만이 아닌 선수행 그 자체에 내재된 가치를 교육적으로 이해하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 먼저 모든 사람이 본래 부처이기 때문에 일체의 작위적인 수행노력을 거부하는 무사선에 대해 교육내재적인 입장에서 살펴본다. 기존의 기능주의적 교육관에서는 무사선에 대해 어떤 교육적인 논의도 거의 불가능하다. 하지만 교육내재적인 시각에서는 깨달음 실현을 위한 수단이나 방법이 아닌 수행 그 자체의 내재 가치에 주목할 수 있는 계기를 제공하고 있다. 문자선에서는 문자, 언어에 대한 집착을 경계해서 ‘불립문자’를 표방하던 것이 결국 대중적인 소통의 측면에서 조사들의 선어록 모음인 공안집을 만들게 되면서, 본래 취지와는 달리 훈고학적 주석학으로 전락하는 과정에 대해 비판적으로 살펴본다. 문제는 문자선에서 활용된 문자, 언어를 목적으로서의 깨달음을 표현하는 내용으로 수용하는 것이 아니라, 선수행을 위한 하나의 실마리나 소재로만 국한해서 활용할 경우, 본래의 취지가 살아날 수 있는데, 이는 교육내재적인 시각에서 조명할 때 보다 풍부하게 드러날 수 있다. 그리고 ‘묵조선’에는 ‘무사선’이나 ‘문자선’의 한계를 나름대로 극복하고자 추구했던 수행과 깨달음을 동일시하지만, 최소한의 소재마저 배제한 상태에서의 수행 내재성 강조는 오히려 형식적인 틀로서의 조용히 좌선에만 매몰되는 과정을 살펴본다. 소재를 배제한 한계는 있었지만, 수행자체의 내재적 가치를 추구한 점에서는 무사선보다 한 단계 더 나아간 진전을 이루었음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

This writing, concerning the practices of Zen Buddhism in the Song Era, China, including ‘MoosaZen’, ‘MoonjaZen’ and ‘MookjoZen’, is intended to understand educationally the intrinsic values of Zen practice itself much further than as a simple methodology for achieving spiritual enlightenment. Apart from the value of enlightenment as the end, performance of Zen as a process also has its own value, which can be well revealed only when understood educationally. First, ‘MoosaZen’, which rejects all contrived efforts of performance because all men are Buddha by nature, will be considered from an educational intrinsic view. Regarding ‘MoosaZen’, hardly any educational discussion is possible from the existing functionalist view of education. However, educational intrinsic viewpoint provides an opportunity to note the intrinsic values of performance itself rather than a means or method to achieve enlightenment. As for ‘MoonjaZen’, which advocated ‘no explanation by characters’ in guard against attachment to characters and languages, fell down into exegetic comments deviating from the original intent as they began making public peace books, a collection of Zen analects by historic master monks, in terms of popular communication. While reviewing this process critically, it will be underscored that the original purport can come to life by using characters and languages only for a clue or material for Zen practice, not by accepting them as the content that expresses enlightenment as the end. The result will be more productive when the characters and languages are illuminated from an educational intrinsic point of view. Also, as for ‘MookjoZen’, in which performance and enlightenment were equated with each other in an effort to overcome the limitations of ‘MoosaZen’ and ‘MoonjaZen’, emphasizing the intrinsic character of performance with exception of the minimum material simply reduced this system to a silent sitting in Zen meditation as a formal frame, instead. Despite the limitation of excluding material, this made a one-step further progress, compared to ‘Moosa Zen’, in the sense of pursuing the intrinsic values of performance itself.
