담헌 홍대용의 연행 중 교우활동과 교육적 의의

국문 초록

이 연구는 담헌 홍대용(1731-1783)이 연행(燕行)이후 보다 적극적이고 지속적인 교우활동을 함으로써, 첫째 당시에 어떤 교육적 영향을 미쳤으며, 둘째 오늘날 우리에게 어떤 교육적 시사점을 주는가를 파악하기 위해, 「을병연행록」을 바탕으로 진행하였다. 담헌 홍대용은 김원행의 문하생으로서 실천할 수 있고 실제로 유용한 학문에 관심을 가졌다. 석실서원에서 김원행 문하의 여러 인물들과 접하고 나주에서 나경적 등과 교류하면서 학문에 힘을 기울였을 뿐만 아니라, 이론을 바탕으로 실제 혼천의와 자명종을 제작하는 등 실천에 힘을 기울이기도 하였다. 35세(1765)때 홍대용은 서장관이 된 숙부 홍억이 연행을 가게 되자 자제군관으로서 동행하게 되었다. 홍대용은 이 연행의 내용을 자세히 기록하여 「을병연행록」이라는 여행일기를 저술하였다. 6개월에 걸친 이 연행일기를 보면, 연행 중 실제 북경에서 있었던 기간은 2개월에 불과하다. 이 기간 동안 자제군관으로서 홍대용은 자금성은 물론이고 태학과 천주당을 비롯하여 서산 등을 답사하였다. 그리고 간정동이라는 작은 골목에서 항주 출신의 엄성ㆍ반정균ㆍ육비와 더불어 교우활동을 하였다. 홍대용의 교우활동은 한 달 가량 지속되었으나 이 짧은 기간의 만남을 통하여 결국 이들 세 명과 허물없는 천애의 지기를 이루었다. 이와 같이 홍대용과 엄성ㆍ반정균ㆍ육비의 교우활동은 이후 박지원을 비롯하여 이덕무ㆍ박제가ㆍ유득공과 같은 조선의 지식인들에게 크게 영향을 주었다. 그리고 중국에서는 이조원ㆍ이정원ㆍ진전 등 중국의 지식인들에게도 영향을 주었다. 특히 온갖 어려움 속에서도 적극적이고 지속적인 교우활동을 통하여 결국 상호신뢰ㆍ상호존중ㆍ상호성장의 교육적이고 창조적인 만남으로 승화시켰던 홍대용의 삶은 우리가 몸소 본받아야할 교육적 귀감으로 사료된다.

영문 초록

Educational innovation has been changed on the basis of the nation’s interest. The teacher has taught and the student has learned what the nation chooses as value. Under this kind of system, the relationship between the teacher and the student is only one-sided. Though the student can ask questions to the teacher, mostly the teacher teaches the knowledge to the students. And the teachercentered education has been criticised. These days the student-centered education has been emphasized. For student-centered education, the school system that is focused on the teacher-student relation is needed. We take a look the fellowship among the students for the change. We can think the fellowship as students’ play at breaktime or students’ act after class. But in a broad sense we can regard student’s interaction with their friends helping their understanding in the class as fellowship. Learning from the friend may cause better understanding than learning from the teacher. Consequently, in this research, we consider the educational significance of the fellowship. Hong Dae-yong is one example of the fellowship who is a realist in the Joseon Dynasty period in 18C and the leader of Buk-hak School(北學派). He went to China as a diplomat with his uncle, Hong Yeuk. We can notice that he was more interested in making friends with Um Sung(嚴省), Ban Jung-kyun(潘庭均), Yuk Bee(陸飛) from Hangzhou(杭州) than looking Chinese Culture and Customs through his writing「Eul-Byung Yeonhaenglok(乙丙燕行錄)」. They met several times within a month and discussed many subjects from their study to history, Jujahak (朱子學), Yangmyunghk(陽明學), astronomy, math, music, the Public Service Examination(科擧), character(人格), etc. with letters. They kept in touch with each other by letters even Dam-heon(湛軒) Hong Dae-yong came back to Joseon. Through these fellowship they could understand each other and develop their thought. In the former system similar to school like Seonggyun-gwan(成均館), Seowon(書院), Seodang(書堂), the teacher leaded the student and only focused Jujahak, so it was difficult to make the diversity of thought. Hong Dae-yong gave the influence on the other realists like Yeon-am(燕巖) Pak Ji-won(朴趾源), ChoJung(楚亭) Pak Je-ga(朴齊家), Chung-Jang-kwang(靑莊館) Yi Deok-mu(李德懋). Fellowship was not limited by place. We can make it wherever we want. In conclusion, we need to think about the change of school system from teacher-centered education to voluntary school system which is focused on the fellowship.
