The Korean folktale ‘Gurengi Seonbi’ (Fairy-Scholar Serpent) and the Russian folktale ‘Frog Princess’ depict the Marriage of Different Beings. The Marriage of Different Beings portrays the marriage between supernatural beings and human beings. In general, the Marriage of Different Beings focuses on the next generation. For instance, heroic mythology is typically classified as a case of the Marriage of Different Beings. What is interesting is that the two folktales focus on the entities who got married. It is thus necessary to read between the lines of what happens to the two human beings. According to Aarne-Thompson’s classification, Gurengi Seonbi belongs to Folktale Type 425 (i.e., Search for a Lost Husband), and Frog Princess to Folktale Type 402 (i.e., The Frog as Bride). The main body of this paper is composed of three parts: (i) the narrative structure and meaning of Frog Princess, (ii) the narrative structure and meaning of Gurengi Seonbi, and (iii) the comparison of the symbolism represented in the two folktales. In order to understand folktales, it is required to understand symbolism prior to types of folktales. This paper explores the following in detail: (i) What does ‘Search for a Lost Husband and Wife’ signify?, (ii) What do Serpent and Frog symbolize respectively?, (iii) What do main characters’ ordeals represent?, and (iv) What is the role of assistants who help out the main characters? As the result of the current research, we reach the following conclusions: ‘Search for a Lost Husband and Wife’ does not show any significant difference irrespective of the gender of main characters. Typically, female main characters experience the painful ordeal of the search process, whereas male main characters just meet their assistants without a terrifying ordeal. The social status of main characters is strikingly different to each other in Korean folktales, but not in Russian folktales. Although they show a difference in narrative structures, Korean and Russian folktales symbolize only one and the same thing; i.e., passage rites. Passage rites describe the process of growth of immature beings into mature beings. Main characters are immature at the initial stage. Later on, however, they endure ordeals, complete their mission, and ultimately become mature. They might face a symbolic death. The two folktales depict the process of constructing main characters’ identity through the symbolic death.
