This paper aims to reflect on “Russianness” from the viewpoint of biblical hermeneutics in the evangelical sense, characterized by Christocentric worldview and dual approach to the Bible: unity in essence and diversity in non-essential part. The idea of the Russianness can be classified into the fundamental worldview, its cultural representations (ideologies, practices and institutions, etc.) and mentality (habitual thought and behavior patterns), which is derivative of the previous two dimensions. In reality the three constituents are indivisibly associated and interacted. Theoretically, the eclecticism was characteristic of the majority of Christian cultures in theological respect, which led to the ambivalent and selfcontradictory socio-cultural institutions, then both of which contributed to the formulation of unpredictable and disintegrating mentality. In this paper, the similar ideas of Russianness in Russian Orthodoxy and oeuvres of N. V. Gogol and F. M. Dostoevsky were reflected separately from the biblical viewpoint. As a result, it turned out that the Russian Orthodox worldview and its derivatives in sociocultural and mental dimensions are characterized by eclecticism of heterogeneous worldviews, such as Byzantine Orthodoxy, Platonism, etc. Gogol’s and Dostoevsky’s ideas of Russianness are also imbued with similar eclecticism in worldview, cultural representation and mentality, while there being crucial differences between them. The idea of Russianness has both affirmative and negative potentials in itself, and the path to realize its affirmative potentials is to activate the virtuous circle of understanding, reflections, practice, feedback according to more universal and feasible worldview.
