This article examines the Indian history and culture, which strongly influence the Indian work culture. The Indian traditional culture is rooted in the Hindu-religion. In the Hindu religion, a person should commit
his/her own work as an appointed duty, which is given by birth as prescribed by religion. It constitutes the idea of work and occupational value systems. It gives an impression to Gandhi. Gandhi, the charismatic leader guides the political and spiritual way for Indian in the colonial period, renewed and re-interpreted the Indian traditional culture and tried to imply these in the work place. Some of these ideas were transmitted to the conception of Indian socialism. The bureaucracy that was introduced during the colonial period has been changed according to the social objectives of the Indian society. After independent, government officials participated in making the rules. At that time, they gave much benefit upon themselves. During industrialization, Indian bureaucracy played a ‘meditative role’ in the business world and employer-employee relations. Also the planed socialistic economy was controlled through the bureaucracy. Indian bureaucracy has expanded its realms and commands enormous power. In the unique religious cultural and historical background, India has been made to adopt a different work culture as distinct from thethe Indian context, work is a kind of obligation for others. Work is a performance, which serves each other and more associated with the whole society. Secondly, the reward of work is different from the Western. In western conceptualization, the form of rewards seems to dominate as the motive of work and can change their status as a reward of work. However, the reward of work is an individual satisfaction in the Indian context. Their aim of work is to serve others and it contributes the harmony of society. So the result of work cannot break this harmony and cannot change the whole relationship, including the class or caste system. Lastly, work is related to certain social values. In the west, work has
been developed in the individual and it has been separated from other social values. On the other hand, in India, values related with work have been merge in the culture and mingled with other social factors thereby
restricting one’s work.
