국제청년캠프에 참여한 한국청년들의 경험에 이해와 다문화 교육의 방향 제언

국문 초록

다문화 교육에 대한 인식이 강조되고 있는 현 시점에서 국제이해 관련 캠프의 중요성이 부각되고 있다. 그 이유는 한국 청년들이 다문화를 접하고 그들의 인식을 발전시킬 수 있는 직접적인 경험으로서 하나의 수단이기 때문이다. 반면, 한국 청년들이 국제이해 관련 캠프에서 어떠한 영향을 받고 있는지에 대한 평가는 거의 진행되어 오지 않고 있다. 이와 함께 본 연구는 국제청년캠프에 참가한 한국 청년들의 다문화에 대한 인식을 이해하고 그에 대한 변화를 조사하여 미래 한국 다문화 교육을 위한 방향을 논의하고자 하는 목적을 가지고 있다. 이를 위해서 본 연구는 한국 내에서 진행되는 한국제청년캠프를 선택하여 핵심이 되는 하나의 프로그램을 대상으로 평가를 위한 사례연구를 진행하였다. 자료는 캠프에 연구자가 직접 참여하여 관찰과 면담을 통해 수집하였으며, 해당 캠프에서 보유하고 있는 각종 자료를 수집하여 분석하고 해석하였다. 사례연구로서 분석과 해석방법은 해당 프로그램에서 나타나는 다양한 문화적 기호들을 유형화하여 한국 청년들의 인식을 이해하고자 하였다. 이러한 과정을 통해 얻은 결과는 한국 청년들은 다문화에 대한 인식이 많이 부족함을 이해할 수 있었다. 그 이유는 개인주의적이고 국가와 민족에 강조된 문화적 이데올로기를 소유하고 있었기 때문이라고 본 연구는 해석하였다. 이와 함께 본 연구는 다문화 교육의 시작은 한국 청년들이 가진 인식의 실체를 정확히 이해하고 그에 적합한 지식, 가치와 태도, 기술을 고민해야할 것을 제언한다.

영문 초록

Recently, the importance of international youth camps has been emerging with an emphasis on perceptions about multicultural education. One possible reason is that the international youth camp offers direct experiences for improving perceptions on multiculturalism. Unfortunately, research has rarely been conducted assessing how Korean youth has been affected by the camps in relation to their multicultural perceptions. Accordingly, this study firstly purports to understand Korean participants' multicultural perceptions. It also suggests implications for future multicultural education based on these perceptions. To achieve these purposes, the study selected an international youth camp in South Korea and proceeded to organize a case study for evaluating a major particular program. To collect data, the study participated and observed the camp. Korean participants were interviewed, and related documents were reviewed. To analyze and interpret the results, the data was codified and particular stories, events, and experiences were selected. Also, as a case study, cultural symbols related to Korean participants' perceptions of muliticulturalism were analyzed and interpreted. Among these processes the study highlighted the issue of Korean youths' lack of multicultural perceptions. A possible reason is that Korean youth has an individual, ethnic, and national oriented personality as a dominant cultural symbol and ideology. Therefore, this study suggests that multicultural education should be constructed and managed based on current Korean youths' perceptions on knowledge, attitude, and practice of multiculturalism.
