Is strategy indeed needed in mission field? If the answer is yes, what is strategic mission? What we really need to think about is the definite definition of strategic mission. In order to come up with the definite definition of strategic Gospel preaching, it is important to consider beforehand; the purpose, goal, policy and principle of mission. Generally speaking in military terminology, the word, 'strategy' has been used throughout the years mostly meaning 'generals' office' or 'command of general' . Now this meaning has developed over time into another similar meaning. It now has the meaning of effectively setting up a road map by means of military, political and psychological ways in order to capture an aimed territory. On the other hand, there is what is called the 'tactics' which is similar to the word 'strategy'. This word 'tactics' means changing strategic operations varying on situational cases on the battle field. Therefore to sum up all these different terminologies, there must foremost be the 'purpose' and in order to reach that purpose, various 'goals' must be set up. And in order to achieve there goals, 'strategies' are needed. When practicing the strategies on the actual field, conditional changes in strategies are tactics. Then what are some of the strategies we come to encounter in the living Bible? In the Bible, we see that the purpose is that God's people are to live for the glory of God. In order to glorify God, there is a goal given. The goal is to spread the Good News to its people. And for the goal of spreading the Gospel to the people, practical strategies are needed. God has come up with 3 factors as to setting up the strategies in Gospel preaching; selection, holiness, and Holy Ghost's guidance. However, strictly speaking, these 3 factors are quite impossible for any human being to handle. But rather the supremacy over these 3 factors lies with our Heavenly Father. Thus, it is correct to categorize this matter into principles. Jesus has been a model for strategic Gospel preaching and His disciples were also to do the same. They are preaching, teaching, and healing. Of course there are more other then t! hese 3 factors, but the ones mentioned above are the most important ones. The problem of the matter is that whether any kind of strategic mission has ever existed in the history of Gospel preaching. The truth is that no human being has ever come up with an actual mission strategy and thereby practiced none. Especially in Christopher Dawson's writings, you will be able to see that evangelists or missionaries has only performed their mission works solely based on strategies of God. But from the start of the 1800' s, mission centers were built up and in these mission centers, people worked together to come up with effective Gospel preaching strategies. There are representatively Henry Venn's principles and J. Nevius's plan. From the start of the 1900's, as mission conferences were built, they wanted to set up new directions and strategies in Gospel preaching but unfortunately the gap in thinking patterns between the Lausanne conference and the Ecumenical movement, they were unable to resolute a misson start! egy. However, other mission bodies have come up with such ideas like, adopting unreached people, power encountering and team missions. One thing we are still uncertain of is that can these ideas really become practical mission strategies? As discussed in the introduction, strategies are not performed solely based on its individual part. But it requires synthetic planning in order to have it effectively performed. When strategy is planned with ignoring all other factors,(purpose, goal, ...) it could only become one policy. If the 20th century was an era of one policy based Christian society, then the 21st century should be an era of composite policy based Christian society. In order to achieve this, we are required to be more definite with the definition of strategic mission. Therefore we n
