영문 초록

It is generally acknowledged that Oxford is one of Britain' s most pictured and most widely described cities. The reason is that Oxford is a city of education . literary tradition . history . beauty and fame. First of all. Oxford is a place of intellectual activity advancing the frontiers of knowledge. It is also the birthplace of the Oxford English Dictionary. "the ultimate authority on the language."4) Oxford is the setting of A]jce in Wonderland. of Thomas HardY's Jude the Obscure. of innumerable poems. novels and fantasies. To name but a few. -Shelley. G.M. Hopkins. T.E. Lawrence. better known as Lawrence of Arabia. Evelyn Waugh. John Betjeman- they all owe something to Oxford or Oxford University. Historically. Oxford is a home to the Stuart Court because King Charles had his capital here from 1642 to 1646. Oxford has nurtured statesmen. politicians. religious leaders at all times and many British Prime Ministers in the past two centuries. Aesthetically Oxford is dotted with beautiful buildings which date back as early as 11th century . They are the works of William Orchard. Christopher Wren. and Nicholas Hawksmoor. The name Oxford may remind some Oxonians of their past life there: t utori als and lectures. quiet and romantic promenades. punting in Cherwell and Thames rivers. To ordinary people who have not lived or visited it is one place where they must visit either for pleasure or for study.
