국문 초록

초등학교 현장에서 교사들이 바라는 ‘흥미 있고 유의미한 수업’이 쉽지 않은 데에는 흥미의 개념적․실천적 이해 부족이 근원적인 한계로 가로놓여 있다. 이러한 문제의식으로부터 본고는 이원론적 철학 전통의 혁신을 시도한 프래그머티즘 철학자 듀이의 흥미 이론을 재고찰함으로써, 학생의 흥미와 교과의 의미를 대립적으로 보는 일상적 통념을 넘어서 흥미의 교육적 의미와 교사의 실천적 과제에 대해 새로운 통찰을 얻는 데에 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 먼저 듀이 당대의 전통적 도야론과 낭만적 흥미론 논쟁에 대한 그의 비판을 통해 흥미와 관련한 교육적 오류의 원인으로 자아와 세계, 주체와 객체, 아동과 교육과정을 대립적으로 구분하는 이원론적 전제가 깔려 있음을 드러낸다. 다음으로 ‘참여자의 태도’와 ‘익숙함과 낯설음 사이의 균형’으로 설명한 듀이의 흥미 개념을 분석하여 그가 일원론적으로 재개념화한 의미의 특징적 면모를 밝힌다. 마지막으로 직접적 흥미와 간접적 흥미의 개념 구분에 근거하여 제안하는 흥미의 연속적 성장 원리로부터 초등교사의 실천적 과제로 이끌어낼 수 있는 시사점을 논의한다.

영문 초록

It appears very rare and difficult for most of elementary school teachers to experience both interesting and meaningful classroom practices. One of the problematic sources should be attributed to the limitation of conceptual and practical understanding about what is genuinely educative interest. Critically reflecting upon these theoretical and practical problems, this essay aims at exploring the conception of interest and its educational implications in Dewey’s pragmatist philosophy, with a view to providing a new insight that enables elementary teachers to overcome the oppositional preconceptions of the children’s interest set over against the intellectual meanings of curriculum. For this purpose, to begin with, we analyze Dewey’s discussion about conflicting issues between the traditional disciplinary education and the romanticist counterpart appealing to children’s interests. It is shown that both of them share commonly the fundamental dualistic presuppositions separating between self and the world, subject and object, child and curriculum, etc. As an alternative way of reconceptualizing interest based on Dewey's thoughts, it is suggested that we should look profitably into the interest as embodied in the participants’ disposition and that teachers should perceive and utilize actively the developing principle of interest as direct and indirect in passing through the consciously-organized educational situations.
