자유교육의 전통에서 본 하버드대학의 교양과정 개혁

국문 초록

한국 대학들의 교양과정은 해방 후 지속적으로 미국의 영향을 받아 왔다. 오늘날 일반교육(과정)이라 불리는 미국 대학들의 교양과정은 기본적으로 미국에 이식된 유럽의 자유교육 전통이 미국적 상황과 조건에 맞추어 적응과 변용을 거듭해 온 소산이다. 본 논문은 미국 대학들 중 교양과정 개혁을 선도해 온 하버드대학의 사례를 역사적으로 고찰하였다. 하버드의 ‘교양과정’은 대략 ‘필수 교과제’로부터 출발해서, 엘리엇 총장에 의한 ‘선택제’로의 개혁, 그리고 로웰 총장에 의한 ‘집중-분산-선택’의 삼층 구조로의 변경, 1945년 코넌트 총장에 의한 ‘분산 이수제’의 이완과 변질, 1978년의 데릭 복 총장에 의한 중핵교육과정의 탄생 등의 단계를 거쳐 지금에 이르렀다. 연구자는 이러한 변화의 과정에서 관찰되는 한두 가지 포인트를 지적하고, 특히 중핵교육과정이 한국 대학들의 교양과정 개혁에 주는 시사점을 논하였다.

영문 초록

The general education programs of American universities are to be understood as a legacy and also as an American version of the European tradition of liberal education. This paper inquired historically the reforms of general education of the Harvard University, which have taken the lead of general education movement among American colleges and universities. Harvard’s educational curriculum started from the prescribed subjects system. President Charles Eliot reformed it into the elective system, and then his successor President Lowell modified it into the tripartite structure, that is concentration- distribution-electives. President Conant maintained the distributional system in 1945 reform, but distribution requirements served only the negative purpose of preventing overspecialization, and on the whole they served it badly by its gradually loosened implementation. So came the latest reform in 1978 under the leadership of President Derek Bok, with the final product of “Core Curriculum”. I observed a couple of remarkable points in these processes of change, and proposed a suggestion for the reforms of general education programs among Korean colleges and universities.
