헝가리 신화의 아시아적 모티프

국문 초록

언어학자인 셔이노비치 야노시 (Sajnovics, Janos) 가 헝가리 민족의 아시아 기원설을 처음으로 주장한 이후 언어학과 고고학， 그리고 민속학 등의 영역에서도 그의 주장을 뒷받침하는 결과물들이 속속 제시되고 있다. 그 결과로 현재 헝가리 민족의 아시아 기원설은 어느 정도 정설로 받아들여지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 헝가리 민족의 기원과 정체성 을 현재까지의 연구관점이 아닌 문학적 관점에서 밝혀보고자 시도하였다. 특히 구비문학의 한 장르인 신화는 한 민족의 공동의 신념과 사상을 투영하고 있어 민족 정체성을 밝히는데 귀중한 자료가 된다. 연구방 법론으로는 헝가리 민족의 아시아 기원설을 연역적 방법으로 증명해가는 방법을 채택하였고 동일 모티프를 가진 유사 신화의 해석과 관련해서는 인간의 보편적 무의식론과 전파론을 둘 다 수용하되 헝가리 민족의 아시아 기원설이 정설로 받아들여지고 있는바 전파론에 좀 더 큰 비중을 두고 분석하였다. 분석 결과 헝가리 신화 속에는 다양한 아시아적 모티프가 융해되어 있음이 발견되었는데 본고에서는 그 중에서도 가장 두드러진 모티프를 중심으로 분석하였다. 헝가리 민족의 아시아 기원을 증명할만한 신화소로 우선 잠수(潛水) 모티프를 들 수 있다. 잠수 모티프는 헝가리의 창세신화， 핀-우그르 어속에서 분리되어 호수와 늪지대가 많은 서북쪽으로 이동하여 현재의 스칸디나비아 반도와 발트해 연안까지 옮겨간 핀-페르미 어족， 헝가리 민족과 함께 핀-페르미 어족에서 분리되어 나온 민족， 그리고 지리적 근접성으로 인해 핀-우그르 민족과 접촉했을 것으로 판단되는 몽골족과 헝가리 민족이 아시아에서 유럽으로 이동하는 과정에서 서로 영향을 주고받았을 것으로 추측되는 루마니아의 창세신화에서 발견되었다. 둘째로 헝가리 신화에서는 세계수(世界壽)와 샤마니즘의 밀접한 연관 성이 발견되었다. 여타 민족의 신화에서도 발견되는 세계수는 하늘과 땅을 연결한다는 세계관의 표현에 그치는 반면 헝가리 민족과 아시아 북부지역 유목민들에게 있어서의 세계수는 천상세계와 지하세계를 연결하는 중심축일 뿐만 아니라 영(靈)이 머무는 신성한 존재로 나타나고있다. 결론적으로 헝가리 민족이 아시아에서 유럽으로 이주해 온 지 천 여 년이 넘어 외형적으로나 문화적으로는 유럽 민족들의 모습을 하고 있으나 수천 년 동안 헝가리 민족의 사상과 세계관이 농축되어 입에서 입으로 구전되어 온 신화 속에서는 아시아적 모티프와 사상이 다양하게 투영되어 있음을 발견할 수 있다. 따라서 헝가리인들의 민족적 혹은 사상적 정체성을 밝히는데 있어서 아시아를 제외한 유럽에서만 그 해답 을 찾으려든다면 그 결과의 오류는 자명하다 하겠다.

영문 초록

Linguist Sajnovics Janos first argued that the Hungarian people come from Asia. Since then, the findings supporting his theory have been emerging in a successive way in archeology, folklore, etc. as well as linguistics. As a result, the theory that the Hungarians derive from Asia is currently regarded as established to some degree. This study attempted to make clear the origin and identity of the Hungarian people in literary terms. In particular, mythology, a genre of oral literature, is a valuable material in determining national identity, since it reflects a common belief and thought of a nation. The study adopted a method of demonstrating the Asia origin theory in deductive reasoning. In addition, as regards the interpretation of pseudo-myths with the same motif, the study accepted both universalism and diffusionism, but put more emphasis on the latter, considering that the Asia origin theory is considered to be established. The analysis showed that Hungarian myths have various Asiatic motifs melt, the most striking one of which was a main object of this study. First, the motif of diving can be referred to as a mytheme that proves the origin of the Hungarians from Asia. The motif of diving was found in the Creation myth of Hungary, the myths of the nations belonging to the Finn- Ugr language family as well as the Hungarian (Magyar) language family and the Creation myth of Rumania that enables to guess that there were, in the course of the migration from Asia to Europe, mutual influences between Mongolians and Hungarians which seem to get in contact with the Finn-Ugr people because of geographic proximity. Second. Hungarian myths showed close relationships between a world tree and shamanism. While the world trees found in other myths are no more than the expressions of the world view that they connect the sky with the earth, those in Hungarians and northern Asian nomads are the central axes connecting the celestial world with the underground world and the holy beings in which souls stay. In conclusion, the Hungarian people are not different from other European people culturally as well as physically, since more than thousand years have passed since their migration into Europe, but Asiatic motifs and thoughts are melt in various ways in the myths orally transmitted with their world view condensed. Therefore, the consequential fallacy seems to be self-evident, if one merely tries to find answers in Europe in determining the national or mental identity of the Hungarians.
