체코어 정서법(正書法)의 원리와 발달사적 특징

국문 초록

오늘날의 체코 땅에서 시작한 문자의 역사는 대략 1100년이 넘은 것으로 알려져 있으나 실질적 의미의 현대 체코어의 발달사는 약 700 년 정도로 보는 것이 일반적인 견해이다. 이러한 사실은 최초의 체코어 문헌들 중에서 라틴어로 쓰인 문장이나 텍스트에 몇 개의 어휘나 짧은 문장 정도로 출현하는 체코어의 흔적이 아닌, 다소 긴 분량의 체코어 문헌이 나타난 시기를 13세기 중엽으로 보기 때문이다.1) 그리고 12세 기 초부터는 체코어가 자신의 최초의 문어 표현수단이었던 글라골 문 자의 사용을 포기하고, 언어 발생학적으로 다른 어군에 속하는 언어들 을 위해 만들어진 라틴문자를 완전 수용하기에 이르는데, 이러한 상황 은 이후에 진행될 수차례의 정서법(orthography)의 개혁을 예고하였 다: 체코어 텍스트 생성에 가장 적합한 라틴문자의 사용의 규칙을 만들 어 내기 위해 가장 원시적인 단계의 소위 “단순정서법 체계”부터 시작 하게 되었다. 이런 의미에서 볼 때 체코어의 정서법의 발달사는 단지 맞춤법과 직 접적인 연관이 있는 좁은 의미의 정서법의 역사만이 아닌, 문자의 사용 그리고 형태와 관련된 변천사, 즉 일정한 시대까지 사용되어온 문자를 다른 문자로 안정적으로 대체하는 문제를2) 다루는 정서법까지 포괄하 고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이 논문은 체코어의 정서법을 지배하는 정서법의 원리들을 소개하 고, 그 생성에서부터 현대에 이르기까지 변천과정에 나타난 핵심 내용 들을 개괄적으로 논의함을 목적으로 한다. 체코어의 정서법에 대한 고찰을 통해, 우리는 체코어가 음소적 원리 를 정서법의 기본 원리로 삼고 형태론적 원리를 유표적(有標的)으로 적용한 근거를 찾게 된다. 이는 환경에 따라 달라질 수 있는 음성형태 들의 대해 시각적으로 동일한 문자 형태를 보존함으로써 한 어휘에서 파생된 형태소들에 대해 동일한 의미를 확보하기 위함으로 추정된다. 특히 이 원리는 체코어처럼 문법범주를 실현함에 있어 복잡․다양한 형 태적 변화를 요하는 굴절어에 특수하게 적용되는 정서법 원리라고 할 수 있겠다.

영문 초록

Although the first alphabet system had been in use in the area around Czech 1100 years ago, it is a general view that the Czech language has been developing for approximately 700 years. This view is based on the fact that long Czech texts which are written in virtual Czech initially originated from the mid-thirteenth century, in contrast to several Czech sentences or short texts which are recorded in marginal notes or gloss of Latin texts until that time. Those kinds of texts, however, was not written in Glagolitic alphabet, the first unique letter system for Slavonic languages, but in Latin alphabet. Czech renounced the Slavonic literary tradition for a political reason and introduced Latin alphabet created for the different language families into its orthographic system. That is why the first Czech orthography started in a primitive and so simplex shape and needed a little radical reforms on several occasions to adapt Latin alphabet to Czech sounds system. In this context, the history of Czech orthography comprehends not only the development of the rules of spelling in a narrow sense but also the question of how to develop previously used inefficient letter system. The purpose of this thesis is to introduce several principles governing Czech orthography and to describe the brief history of the orthography from the diachronic viewpoint focused on the 6 periods in development of the Czech orthographic system - Primitive orthography, Digraphic orthography, Diacritic orthography, Brethren orthography, Modern orthography, Czech orthography revised edition in 1993. Under consideration of the types of Czech orthography, we assume that Czech adopted the morphological principle of orthography as its dominant principle in order to preserve constant morphs of grammatical morphemes (for instance case markers, that is, case endings), even in a linguistic circumstance where those morphemes are realized phonetically differently.
