Both Czech and Korean proletarian poetries were common in that they
started in the 1920s, under the influences of the ending of the first World
War as well as the successful Russian Revolution, and they oriented
themselves to the new art movement having broken up with the existing
bourgeois culture, and also they aimed at the militant art for the liberation
of the proletariat and the realization of the communist ideology. The poets
of both literatures introduced the themes like social justice, collective life,
class consciousness, political and economic struggle, proletarian revolution
in their literary works. They shared in their emphasis on content over the
form of a literary work, in their concentration on the ideology rather than
the artistic quality, and in their stress on the lower and simple style. It was
same as well that among the poets of two literatures there were voices
against the too much ideology oriented poetry.
On the other hand, the main differences between two proletarian poetries
were that the existing time period of Korean proletarian poetry was much
longer than the Czech one, and the number of Korean proletarian poets and
the literary works was much greater than the Czech one. Therefore, in
Czech proletarian literature we can count only a small number of prominent
theorists and poets like Josef Hora, JIří Wolker, and Stanislav Kostka
Neumann, while in Korean proletarian literature there were many of
remarkable theorists and poets like Kichin Kim, Younghee Park, Hyungwon
Kim, Phalyang Park, Seyoung Park, Changsool Kim, Haegang Kim, Chul
Baek, Whan Kwon, Wha Leem, and prominent theoretists and novelist like
Namcheon Kim, Keeyoung Lee, Sulya Han, Myunghee Cho, Mark Ahan, and
others. Also in Korean proletarian literature there were many prominent
poets like Sangwha Lee, Sukcho Shin, Dongwhan Kim, and others who
started or consolidated their literary career as a proletarian poets, however
soon gave it up for non-ideological poetry, while in Czech proletarian
poetry only Jaroslav Seifert, later Nobel prize winner, can be counted as
such a poet.
One more important difference between two poetries was that Korean
proletarian poetry devoted itself almost wholly to the service to the
doctrine of militant proletarian art, so it could have produced numerous
number of orthodox proletarian poetry, with a exceptionally very few
number of good poetry, while Czech proletarian poetry could have produced
a quite big number of good poetry despite its short period of activity and a
small number of active poets.
Both Czech proletarian poetry having its main phase in the first half of
the 1920s and Korean proletarian poetry having its time period from the
middle of the 1920s till the middle of the 1930s, in spite of its intrinsic
limitations, made a considerable contribution to the two national literatures
with its development of the dynamic literary theory based on the realities
of life and with its production of a number of good poetry, and also with
the introduction of short epic poetry by Wha Leem and development of
proletarian ballad by Jiří Wolker.
