This article presents lexical changes in Romanian Economic Language after
revolution of 1989. In this approach, I concentrated on two facts: 1. Economic
language means a sub-language system which is consisted of economic terminology;
2. 1989 revolution influences on lexical changes. These facts have importance in that
terminological structure has a different way of being used compared to general
vocabulary and 1989 revolution created critical social changes where new
terminology was demanded.
Terminology is a vocabulary of a special subject field. It is usually used by an
expert group of a certain domain. There are several facts that distinguish
terminology from general vocabulary. The ideal type of a terminology -a very
technical terminology- is created by a requires and controled for a special purpose.
Compared to word creation or modification cases, terminology does not need long
period nor general acceptance by society. Terminology, with its systematic features,
can be created by either domain experts or terminologist and can be used by related
fields experts as a more precise communication method. As a remark, terminology is
more dynamic than general vocabularies.
Economic terminology is a group of lexical units which are used for
denomination of economy concerned things and ideas. Economic terminology can be
differentiated in many categories of lexical units by its level of specialization.
As a result of 1989 revolution, Romania faced a structural modification period
from many parts of politico-economical domains, socio-cultural domains etc. This
fact influenced also language, especially vocabulary. And economic terminology has
been the most dynamic part of Romanian lexicon. New terminology was needed to
denominate new concepts and ideas from a new social and political system. Terms
like acţiune (share), obligaţiune (bond), privatizare (privatization) etc. were hardly
seen from printed materials. On the contrary, many terms referring to old socialist
concepts like naţionalizare (nationalization), economia planificatã (planed economy)
etc. were disappeared immediately.
The principal way of increasing terminology from post revolutionary period was
borrowing words from other languages, its main source being French and English.
Borrowing words from French were easily accepted to Romanian linguistic system,
those two languages being categorized in same language family. French loan words
are used also for creation of new words with Romanian suffix. Terminology
borrowing cases from French followed the same morphological rules which are
applied to other general loan words. On contrary, English influences caused some
confusions in the process of integrating them in the Romanian vocabulary, one of
the reasons being the differences of pronunciation rules. But currently it exercises
the most powerful influences on Romanian language.
Semantic changes constitute also important part of economic language. Some
new terms were made by adding new sens to existing words. For example, the
word asigurare has had a sens of socialist idea of assuring people, not a sens of
capitalist insurance. But this word is used with a sens of insurance together with
the word insurance which was borrowed directly from English. A series of
borrowed terms from English about a century ago, reappeared recently and are used
widely by experts group (ex. CIF, FOB, Ltd).
Terminological changes which were not proceeded by an authorized institut or a
group of terminologists, but proceeded by many kinds of people, led to
terminological confusion past years. It was somewhat foreseen. Now it is showing
that over flowing forms of terms for a single concepts or insufficient terms for
some concepts, incorrectly used terms etc. are settled down in to a standard terms.
