As we have seen above, Realism in literature is an approach that attempts to describe life without idealization or romantic subjectivity in reaction to the highly subjective approach of romanticism. Although realism is not limited to any one century or group of writers, it is most often associated with the literary movement in the 2nd half of 19th-century France, specifically with the novels of Flaubert and Balzac and the short stories of Maupassant. George Eliot introduced realism into England, and through the Movement of Young Germany(Das junge Deutschland) realism entered Germany. In Russia, realism was represented in the novels of Turgenev, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, and the plays and short stories of Anton Chekhov. William Dean Howells introduced it into the United States. Realism has been chiefly concerned with the commonplaces of everyday life among the middle and lower classes, where the characters are a product of social factors and environment and are the integral elements in the dramatic complication. In the drama, realism is most closely associated with Ibsen's social plays. Later writers felt that realism laid too much emphasis on external reality. Many, notably one of the greatest realists of all, the Anglo-American novelist Henry James, through his Daisy Miller and The Portrait of a Lady turned to a psychological realism that closely examined the complex workings of the mind. He was highly evaluated by 20th century writers. Realism emphasizes objective presentation of details and events rather than a subjective concentration on personal feelings, perceptions, and imaginings of various characters. Realists often rely heavily on local color, deliberately attempting to portray faithfully the customs, speech, dress, and living and working conditions of their chosen locale such as the middle town of Sinclair Lewis' Main Street.' Realists also stress characterization as an essential element of a literary work. However the difference between realism and naturalism is harder to define, the two terms are often used interchangeably. Naturalism, in literature, an approach that proceeds from an analysis of reality in terms of natural forces, e.g., heredity, environment and physical drives. The naturalists tended to concern themselves with the harsh, often sordid, aspects of life.
