듀이 철학에서 경험 연속성의 교육적 함의

국문 초록

본 연구는 듀이의 경험 연속성 개념에 담긴 교육적 함의를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다.듀이의 교육이론은 경험이론에 토대를 두고 있고 연속성의 개념은 그의 경험철학 전반의 기저를 형성하고 있다.경험은 상호작용의 과정을 통해서 형성되고,그것은 일회성으로 끝나는 것이 아니라 경험 주체의 의사나 바람과는 무관하게 이어지는 새로운 경험 상황에서 어떤 형태로든 영향력을 발휘하게 되는데,듀이는 이것을 경험의 연속성이라고 하였다. 경험의 연속성은 그의 사상에 등장하는 도구주의 이념과 습관이나 성장의 개념 속에 깊이 투영되어 있음을 알 수 있다.이들 관련 개념을 분석함으로써 연속성 개념이 듀이 사상 전반에 편재되어 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 이 경험의 연속성 개념은 초년기 경험의 중요성을 이해하는 논리적 토대를 담고 있으며, 오늘날 부각되는 자기교육의 필요성에 대한 강한 이론적 토대를 제공하기도 한다.한편 경험 연속성의 개념은 실존주의 교육이론에서 주장하는 단속적인 교육과의 관계에 대한 새로운 해석을 가능하게 한다.듀이의 성장교육론은 비연속적인 교육의 가능성을 간과했다는 평가를 받을 수 있다.그러나 교육에서 이 두 가지 이론은 상반된 주장이라기보다는 상호 보완적 형태로 이해할 필요가 있으며,단속적 형태의 성장도 전체적으로 보면 경험 연속성의 연장으로 해석할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The main purpose of this paper is to find out some educational implications from the continuity of experience in John Dewey’s philosophy.Dewey’s educational theory is based on his thoughts of experience, under which conception of continuity penetrate.The continuity ofexperience in Dewey’s philosophy means that every experience takes up something from the preceeding one and exerts some influences on the quality of the subsequent one,being independent of his own intention. This conception of continuity of experience gets to be saturated deeply into his ideas of instrumentalism, habit,and growth. By analysing these words,we can verify the conception of continuity is wide spreadal lover his thoughts. The conception of continuity gives us the logical bases that the earlier period experience is very important in human’s life.And also,it provides us the theoretical bases to the self education which is going to be raised nowadays.In the others,the conception makes possible a new understanding or interpretation to its relation with the discontinuous or intermittent view on education that existentialists like Otto F.Bollnow emphasize.It is not wrong to evaluate that Dewey failed to notice on the human’s possibility of intermittentor jumping development.But we can understand that Bollnow’s intermittent view on education is notcontrary to Dewey’s educational theory of gradual growth.Because the intermittent development can be also regarded as extension of the continuity of experience,when we think it in the terms of the whole of long life.
