국문 초록

본고의 목적은 Dewey 철학에 나타난 공동체 개념을 분석하고 그것이 갖는 교육적 의미를 탐구하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 Dewey의 저작들에 나타난 공동체 개념이 기술적 용법, 찬사적 용법, 규범적 용법으로 사용되고 있음을 밝히고 그 각각의 의미를 검토하였다. 다음으로 공동체의 다양한 용법들 중에서 특히 규범적 용법의 개념이 교육적으로 중요하다고 판단하여, 그것이 갖는 구체적인 의미를 규정하고 그 준거 및 핵심적 요체가 무엇인지를 탐색하였다. 그리고 마지막으로 공동체와 교육이 어떤 연관관계를 갖는지를 공동체 자체의 교육적 기능과 공동체를 위한 학교의 기능으로 나누어 고찰하였다.

영문 초록

In chapter Ⅱ, I examined various usages of the word of community in Dewey's philosophy: descriptive, eulogistic and normative usage. In chapterⅢ, I examined the metaphysical, epistemological, psychological ground of Dewey's conception of community. And I clarified that Dewey's conception of community was defined as a group or social life participating in common activities, sharing the aims, meanings and beliefs of the shared activities, and controling or directing their activities in the light of the consequences of the activities. Also I made clear Dewey thought that the elements in criterion whether a group was a ideal and democratic community or not: How numerous and varied are the interests which are consciously shared? And how full and free is the interplay with other forms of association? In chapter Ⅳ, I maintained that community functioned as educational enterprise through communication, school as a representative/typical formal agent of education was framed to influence the mental and moral disposition of their members in Dewey's philosophy. And school has three major functions in relations of wide community which it is located: to provide a 'simplified environment, to provide a 'purified medium of action, to balance the various elements in social environment.
