국문 초록

이 연구는 직업교육(vocational education)의 역사적 전개과정을 살펴보고, 직업교육에 대한 Dewey의 교육이론을 탐색해 봄으로써 차후 직업교육 전개의 전반적인 방향을 모색해 보는데 그 목적이 있다. 최근 급속한 사회의 변화와 그로 인한 산업구조의 변화로 직업교육에 대한 중요성이 증대되어 가고 있다. 이에 대해 듀이는 개인이 자신의 능력을 개발하고 동시에 사회적 봉사를 하는 것은 직업을 통해 가능하며, 따라서 직업교육은 중요하다고 했다. 그러나 직업교육과 교양교육은 서로 대립되는 것이 아니며 또한 양자를 분리해서도 안된다. 듀이는 개인에게 있어서 교양교육과 직업교육 모두가 필요하며, 따라서 교육에 있어서 직업교육과 교양교육이 양립해야 한다고 주장했다. 그러므로 직업교육은 단순히 산업이나 직업분야에 종사할 사람들에게 그 직업에 필요한 기능이나 기술을 준비시키는 취업교육(trade education)이라기보다는 여러 직업 활동에 포함되어 있는 지적, 도덕적 내용을 가르치는 것까지 포함되어야 한다. 따라서 직업교육은 개인적 측면에서는 직업 적응력을 신장시키고, 사회적 측면에서는 사회적 봉사를 실천하도록 하는 목적을 달성하여야 한다. 물론 그 내용에 있어서는 듀이가 강조한 것처럼 지적이고 도덕적인 성장을 지향하는 것이 포함되어야 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to search the direction of vocational education based on the historical process of development of vocational education and Dewey's education related theories. School education has been a model of education since Greece Era, and liberal education has been considered as the goal of school education. It is true that the liberal education has been predominant over education field. However, the importance of vocational education is increasing because of the rapid progress of society and the change of the organization of industry. According to Dewey, it is possible to develop person's ability and to serve the community thru vocational education. That was a reason why Dewey emphasized vocational education. Vocational and liberal education can not be pitted against each other and can not be divided each other. Dewey asserted that both vocational and liberal education are required for every person, so that these two kinds of education should be compatible each other. In this reason, vocational education should include not only trade education field but also intellectual and moral aspect. Based on this vocational education, people can adapt themselves to their vocation and serve the community. It, of course, should include intellectual and moral growth as Dewey emphasized.
