영문 초록

This study examines how socio-economic characteristics affect Japanese Americans’ decision to adopt Anglicized names. Empirical analysis reveals three main findings. Economic variables like the average household income and housing prices have no impact on Anglicization rates. However, sociocultural factors affect Anglicization rates more than economic factors. Ethnicity is the most significant sociocultural factor, and even though gender has no influence on its own, the interaction of gender and ethnicity has a significant impact. The significance of ethnicity implies that Asian-Americans behave differently than other American ethnicities. The fact that Japanese Americans, males in particular, are found to use American names more than others shows that ethnicity and gender have a special effect. The insignificance of economic variables also suggests future studies, to further the thought on the language use of immigrants to the United States.
