국문 초록

본 연구는 국제체제 차원에서의 국가 간의 국력분포가 군사분쟁과 군사위기의 발발에 미치는 영향에 관한 기존 이론가들의 논의(세력균형이론과 세력우위이론)를 경험적으로 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본 연구의 또 다른 목적은 국력에 관한 기존의 논의들(국가 내부의 자원에 초점을 맞춘)과는 다른 관점의 국력연구(국가 간의 관계에 초점을 맞춘 사회연결망 관점의 국력연구)의 필요성에 대한 제시와 더불어, 기존의 국력지표를 사용한 분쟁/위기모델과 새로운 사회연결망 관점의 지표를 사용한 분쟁/위기모델 간의 설명력 비교를 시도하는 것이다. 1950년부터 2000년까지 국제체제에서 발발하였던 모든 군사분쟁과 군사위기의 사례들을 계량적으로 분석한 본 연구의 분석결과들을 간단히 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 군사분쟁의 발발과 관련해서는 세력우위이론이, 군사위기의 발발과 관련해서는 세력균형이론의 경험적인 설명력의 우위가 증거되었다. 둘째, 국제정치학계 기존의 정적인 국력지표를 사용한 분쟁/위기 모델들과 본 연구에서 새롭게 제시된 동적인 지표를 사용한 모델들을 비교분석한 결과, 새로운 국력지표를 사용한 군사분쟁/위기 모델의 설명력과 예측력이 월등하게 뛰어남이 본 연구를 통하여 또한 증거되었다.

영문 초록

This study posits that the international system structure is more accurately depicted by considering different interaction networks in which all system members participate and that a state’s power is more accurately conceptualized by considering how it interacts with all other states in the international system of different networks. The social network conception of national power, derived from the social network conception of the international system structure, is applied to militarized conflicts one of the most widely studied empirical phenomena in international relations in order to focus on their power explanations. In examining the hypotheses on balance of power theory and power preponderance theory at the system level, the empirical analyses of systemic militarized conflicts find that the overall results do not reveal any clear support for either theory. The balance of power theory, in general, does have support for the hypotheses on the systemic crises, while the power preponderance theory, in general, supports the hypotheses on systemic disputes. The evidence from nonparametric model discrimination statistics and information criteria measures indicates that the systemic conflict models with new social network power measures have greater explanatory power than or statistically outperform those with old attributional power measures, such as Correlates of War index and GNP.
