Korea has a relatively short history of American studies education although Korea and the United States have maintained very close relationship; for many decades. Korea-US diplomatic relations began in 1882 among heated controversies in the Korean government caused by a book, Chosun Chaekyak (朝鮮策略:Korean National Strategy) written by a Chinese diplomat in Japan. According to the author, the United States was not only strong and powerful but also reliable and trustworthy. Today the two countries have become dependable military allies and indispensible economic partners. However, integrated American studies education in Korea started late, compared with Europe or Japan which started American studies education in the 1920s and late 1940s respectively.
In the late 1990s, several universities in Korea started American studies education for undergraduate students although Kyemung University in Daegu had begun its American studies program in the early 1980s. Americans studies programs in Korean universities were introduced as part of international area studies stimulated by the globalization in 1990s. Facing new challenges of globalization, the Korean government needed information about other countries and regions. About six universities started American studies program to meet the increased demand for information on the United States.
In 1996, Pyongtaek University program of American studies began as one of three majors in the division of international relations studies including Chinese and Japanese studies. The program has steadily grown the past 7 years. The total number of students majoring in American studies is about 110. The department of American studies has 5 faculty members; two members are specialized in English language and literature and the other three members in American studies.
Among American studies courses at Pyongtaek University, English and history are emphasized along with other topics like politics, economics, law, foreign relations, geography to provide ample opportunities for the student to find out "What is America?" Especially English is consisted of more than half of the whole American studies program. Without effective English education, American studies program might have hardly succeeded. Beginning student are required to take "Introduction to American Studies" course to get the basic knowledge about the United States and American studies.
American studies education in Korean universities are in the beginning stage, less than 10 years old Nevertheless, the future of American studies education looks promising when it is considered against the background of increasing demand for American studies education in Korea. The ever-growing trade between Korea and the United States, close military and security connections, high demand for practical English, and the new trend of interdisciplinary studies in academic arena promise a good chance for growth. However, American studies program cannot grow without adequate support from the government and educational organizations. It should be remembered that effective support from the Spanish government made "Santa Maria" discover the New World.
