국문 초록

  이 글의 목적은 정부수립 60주년을 맞이하여 해방 이후 현재까지 한국 현대정치사상의 주된 gm름을 구성하는 자유주의ㆍ급진주의ㆍ보수주의ㆍ민족주의의 전개과정을 민주화를 중심으로 개관하는 것이다. 목적론적인 해석이라는 비난을 무릅쓰고 민주주의를 중심으로 말한다면, 해방 이후 한국정치는 근대화(통일국가, 민주국가, 산업국가의 건설)의 과제를 놓고 4대 이념이 각축하면서  이후 형성될 정치적 민주주의의 모습을 조형했다고 할 수 있다. 다시 말해 한국정치는 권위주의정권과 민주화 세력의 대립, 민족주의에 대한 상이한 입장간의 대치, 변혁 이념과의 갈등, 대결 및 수용을 겪으면서 민주화되었던 것이다. 한국(남한) 현대 정치사상의 흐름에 있어서 1945년 해방정국과 1987년 민주화 정국은 결정적인 중요성을 갖는다. 그 이유는 무엇보다도 남북한 분단정권의 수립으로 귀결되는 해방정국은 분단된 남한정권의 기원을 구성한다는 점에서 이후 전개될 한국 현대정치사상의 흐름을 결정적으로 조건지었고, 1987년을 기점으로 한 민주화는 정치적 민주주의의 정착으로 완성되면서 이후 다양한 정치사상이 적응해야 하는 기본 틀을 조형했기 때문이다. 따라서 이 글은 지난 60년 동안 진행된 한국 현대정치사상의 흐름을 해방정국(1945-1948). 장기 권위주의 시기 (1948-1979). 민주주의로의 이행이 진행되는 대전환의 시기(1980-1992), 그리고 민주화 이후의 시기(1993-현재)로 나누어 고찰할 것이다.

영문 초록

  To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the foundation of (South) Korean government, the purpose of this essay is to survey the unfolding of liberalism, radicalism, conservatism and nationalism in light of democratic transition in 1987, the four ideologies which have constituted the major trends of contemporary Korean political thought since the Liberation in 1945. Focusing on democratization at the risk of teleological interpretation, Korean politics since the liberation would lead to democracy whose shape was to be determined by the four contending ideologies competing for fulfilling the task of modernization, the building of reunified, democratic and industrialized nation. In other words, Korean politics would be democratized, going through the confrontation of authoritarian regimes and democratic forces, violent oppositions between different visions of nationalism, and various conflicts over and accommodation with revolutionary ideologies. The liberation and democratizing phases have critical significance in this tumultuous process, for the former constituted the origin of the divided South Korean state which would condition the unfolding of contemporary Korean political thought decisively and the latter in 1987 resulted in the consolidation of democracy and provided the basic framework to which diverse ideologies would have to adapt themselves thereafter. Thus this essay examines the evolution of Korean political thought since the liberation, by dividing the period into four: the liberation phase(1945-1948), the long authoritarian period(1948-1979), the great transformation period(198D-1992) in which democratic transition had taken place, and the post-transitional period(from 1993 on) in which democratic consolidation and deepening have been going on.
